Subject: How do I get items into poser?

Mercie ( ) posted Fri, 17 December 2010 at 9:08 AM · edited Sat, 10 August 2024 at 7:03 AM

I found an item that I like from the internet and I downloaded it. The window for winrar comes up and I extract the runtime to poser's runtime. When I open up poser and go to import---> poser document nothing comes up for me to import when I go to the folder of the object I just imported into poser.

How do I download items from the internet and import them to poser or save them as a file?

If the archive contains the correct directory structure, and it probably will, you will need to extract it to your Poser folder rather than the runtime folder. The contents can then be loaded into the scene via the Poser library.

When I tried importing the runtime folder to Poser an error message popped up

Then your best bet is to extract the files to it's own folder and manually place them where they belong. It seems something is not right with the folder structure of the item.

I tried doing that and the folders still come up empty. I'm downloading from this site

Maybe someone can try to download and then tell me what steps they do

Really can't help you as that is a warez site offering a product found here at MP.

BTW, the first clue is it's a RAR file, which is common to these issues

Oops.

In all fairness, I use WinRAR because it makes larger files smaller than zipping them does. If I have a file size limit I'll use it if it makes the resulting file within the size limit when zipping it won't, but I will agree that warez sites seem to use .rar almost exclusively. But that doesn't always mean it's warez ;o).

The best thing to do (and I know it's a pain in the butt) but if you aren't sure about an items 'origins', do a quick search of the name at all the bigger Poser MP sites like here, Daz, RDNA and Content Paradise. At least you may feel a litter safer using it if you aren't sure who the creator is. Your best bet is to only download free content from those afore mentioned sites which are for the most part checked first to make sure there's no warez content and the item is original to the person giving it away.

Oh okay, thanks. I didn't know that the item was stolen. A friend gave me a link to the site.

I also use WinRAR because of better compression and recovery records.  7z does have tighter compression, but I don't like the interface.

I agree that not all RAR's are warez, but when a person comes to the forum and is mystified by the structure, that is a big giveaway.

The number one reason I make sure I know who I'm downloading from ;o). I don't use many freebies anymore because I can make things myself, but if I do use a free item, it's only from here or one of the other sites I mentioned above. It's too easy to get burned otherwise ;o).

it also means that warez site is distributing poser, hence until SM gets to it (Daz already has), we'll see more of these requests.  my guess is it's the russian again, as it's got the same number of pages of 3d items (430).  big mistake downloading any of 'em, not just for windows malware, but there's a new trojan rootkit affecting OS X and I daresay it's in there as well.  it's virtually undetectable, and doesn't even have a name yet AFAIK.
