Subject: OT Windows 7 search engine does not search external drives

drifterlee ( ) posted Mon, 10 January 2011 at 5:24 PM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 6:26 PM

I really hate the search engine that comes with Win 7. It does not seem to let me pick out the folders or the drive I want to search. For example, I was trying to search for a Poser product called elk.zip on my external drive. No such luck. How does this search engine work? Anyone help me? Thank you!

erm yes it does ;)

in the Start menu search box type Indexing Options

add your externals etc there...

You may encounter an issue. My Windows 7 wanted to reindex the External and Network Drives each time I booted up... I had to turn it off. I was told by MS that this is expected behavior.

If you just need to search for filenames - not search within documents etc. I recommend *Everything* - lightning fast and a tiny footprint - not sure if it works on 7 but probably.

Everything works fine on Win7 (very little does not work on 7 actually...)

I use Everything on Windows 7 Pro all the time, but just like Windows Search, Everything has to recreate it's database every time you start up if you have external drives. While it's still faster than Windows search, this noticably slows it down if you have multiple large externals as I do.

Ah, thanks - good to know. Apparently offline indexes are scheduled for the next release. That might be a partial solution - e.g. index the drive and then turn off monitoring. You'd still have to update the index periodically but at least you might have control over when that happens.
