Subject: Universal Poses

Does anyone know if the universal poses actuallly work?  Do you have to change the poses you want to make them universal or can you just click the double check in the library?  Thanks in advance.

Hmmm. Not sure what universal poses are, are you talking about this?

@ProudApache

It is my understanding, that a pose needs to be saved as a universal pose in order to apply it as a universal pose.

The universal pose file includes additional information, for Poser to handle the difference in joint setup when applying a pose to different figures.

By default Poser has universal poses activated in preferences. So any pose you are saving is being saved as a universal pose.

Meaning, you may get lucky with some newer pose files when applying them as a universal pose.

There's a checkbox in the General Preferences for "Apply Universal Poses".  When this is checked, Poser will try to add the Universal data to any pose you save.   If you're using a "known" figure, this will then apply pretty well to other known figures.

If you're using a figure that isn't in the "known" list, it probably won't work as well.

The list of "known" figures is at runtimefiguresRepose.  If there's a DAT file in that folder for your figure, then the Universal system should work.

IIRC, the manual states that you can apply universal poses by clicking the double-check symbol at the bottom of library.  With Apply Universal Poses active from General Preference, any pose saved back into the library will become a universal pose, as stated in a previous post.  Always turn off IK; depending on the model, there will be some joint displacement and distortion, especially at the feet.

Thank you so much for everyones help.  I understand it a little bit better now.  I actualy did a batch conversion using the universal pose script.  The only problem is, it destroys the poses for the orginal model.  But that's OK cause all I do is re-install the orginal poses.

I would recommend copying your poses to another directory before running any utility on pose files,

Yes, they work, but you need to be saving them as Universal Poses. There is a section in the Manual that covers it. Some poses do not work well with some figures (usually fingers and toes), but then just Zero out those parts and fix, if it is an issue.

Poser includes a whole Folder of Universal Poses... try them out on various figures.

There is a python script somewhere which converts pose to universal pose... PhilC's one ?

You can find the conversion script comes with Poser in this directory:
