I dunno but could you watch the title lengths in the topic? half your question is missing.

(all it shows is "what would a US marshal wear who was in charge of all the other marshals in his")

There are different divisions. Some wear street clothes (suit and tie) just like detectives and some are in specialized tactical units that can look like either soldiers with specialized gear or police officers with specialized gear. I know that doesn't narrow it down much, but that's the way it is...hehe.

I would dress him the way you dress the rest of your troops. If it's a uniform, make him at least a Colonel.

I do know that in the movies (for what it's worth) they are always depicted as in suits unless they are on a tactical mission, in which case they were flack jackets with US Marshal across the back.

well if he wears a suit he wouldn't have a flack jacket until he was on a mission I suppose.

then it ain't a marshall of the old west, e.g. marshall dillon?

at the risk of being sent to gitmo, one would hazard a guess that the uber-marshalls try to stay out of sight whilst the regular marshalls do all the work, or they wear those jackets with "D.O.J." on the back, but with extra gold braids.

and they can wear ordinary street clothes, cutoffs etc and tenny runners as when they travel on commercial aircraft.  Jan

WandW thanks.  But I'm still confused and unsure.

They're just arresting a couple of unarmed fugitives.  Is there any gear in the MP that you think would be good, or should I just put him in a suit and have a couple of uniformed policemen with him?  that would be easiest.

Usually on the news, you see the 'troops' wearing "raid jackets"

http://www.sallyscopshop.com/products-page/raid-jackets/

unless they're going after a dangerous fugitive when they would be in tactical gear. I imagine the supervisory marshal would wear a suit and only perhaps show up at the press conference - behind the U.S. Attorney. I don't think the head guy/gal would wear anything other than a suit unless they were tagging along on a high profile raid to get some camera time. I could be wrong of course :-)

hmm, well I guess he isn't the ultimate one in charge, just in charge of a division.   So then perhaps he wouldn't wear a suit? So what tactical gear here in the MP or from whereever would look good do you all think?

Actually - it depends on the situation. A US Marshal pulling "security" duty on a plane would look like the average Joe/Jane on the plane. One in a tactical situation would be in tactical gear, one directing a tactical situation from a command center could very well be in a suit. If in a suit, the suit would typically black or very dark gray (or very dark blue), a blue, black, or dark red tie, white or light colored shirt, badge either on the belt, on a lanyard around the neck (or in a wallet).

But the suit could be anything you might see a typical white collar worker in - again it depends on what he/she might be doing at the time, though the higher his/her rank/position the more likely he/she might be dressed in a suit.

Yeah, I know, I wasn't much help at all. Sorry, but the situation/duty really dictates the clothing.

actually you were.  In this situation I will dress him in a suit as he would probably not want to be too conspicous initially.

I will need him in tactical gear one day and I have got some swat stuff, but maybe by the time I need it there will be gear more like the examples in the pictures that people have sent me links to above.

Might depend on the locale as well, i.e. in a large jurisdiction, the supervisor might be less likely to get out in the field than in a small one. You might just contact the Marshals Service and tell them you're an author in search of a little accurate information and describe the scenario(s) you have in mind. They might be nice enough to respond.

Esther,

Before quiting my job and going to Iraq as a contractor, I worked as an LEO and for the most part US Marshals dress like everyone else. When they have a desk job they would wear a suit, and depending on what they were working on out in the field, it could be anything from a suit to scumbag. The US Marshals that I met were dressed in slacks and polo's or button down shirts for the most part. They wore coats to conceal their duty weapon and I did not frisk them but I am sure they had backup weapons on them also. If you are looking how to dress a regional supervisor, a suit would be a safe bet, something that wouldn't stand out in a group. The two Marshals that I met, I never would have guessed if I had not been at work.

I hope this helps you out.

The uniform would be highly dependent on location, too. A New York marshall would either wear a suit, or a S.W.A.T -type uniform. In the southeastern or western states, it could be the S.W.A.T look, or a more 'old west' shirt, trousers, and cowboy hat. In the northern states, it could even look a bit like Canadian Mounted Police.

In the US, the uniform 'fashion' tends away from the military look with epulets, or decoration, and more toward the functional or comfortable. Except in places like Philidelphia, where they look like postmen.

If this is a Federal Marshall, it would probably be a suit, like the FBI.

shadowhawk2zero ( ) posted Thu, 27 January 2011 at 1:31 PM

The only time they would wear a combat uniform such as a S.W.A.T. type you are talking about would be for a high risk warrent or assualt like the Karresh raid back in the early 90's. Mostly that kind of thing would be left to the ATF, DEA and FBI. The U.S. Marshals are more detective and investigators. Now you have the whole Federal Prisoner transport unit and they were uniforms like that but they are a much smaller group.

Looks awsome Esther! That is a really good interpritation of a field supervisor from the U.S. Marshals. Glad all of the info provided from all of us helped you out! Looking forward to seeing more of this.

Thanks.  I really appreciate all the info.  Actually I should keep it as a reference file for when I do other scenes. I actually have some gear from poser world with the big hat someone mentioned that would probably be good as well for certain scenes.

If you ever need info on something like this feel free to PM me and ask away. I have worked with several Law Enforcement agencies both in the States and over here in Iraq, and would be willing to help you out as much as I can. As far as the big hat goes, unless you are needing a Texas Ranger it might be a little out of place.
