Subject: Too Much Stuff

thefixer ( ) posted Tue, 08 February 2011 at 9:04 AM · edited Thu, 30 January 2025 at 9:07 AM

Anyone else feel they have just too much stuff in their runtimes?

I looked at what I had just now and thought, "heck I forgot I had that"  or I look at something and think "haven't used that in a while" or "I've only used that once" or even "I've had this for ages and never used it"

And then to top it all off I go and buy something else [when I can afford it] and that sits there for Months/years on end.

Just too much stuff...

Yep and I keep on forgetting if the stuff is for V3 or V4--until I try and fit it especially shoes (shoes for V3 don't fair too well on V4's footsies).  Jan

Y-E-S

Beginning to hate sorting though my Poser-related content.

I think I shall give up using DAZ3D figures.

That might solve 70 per cent of my problem.

As if.

It seems inevitable that I am going to buy something that I already bought before.

I dont have much in em, but I have too many runtimes :) every time I make something it gets a new one.

Realize I want an item, go to find it in runtime(s), hunt for half an hour, curse loudly since it is unfindable in the pure volume of stuff, go dig through installers (especially for free stuff), can't find installer, go redownload item just so I can see where it goes, curse again cause it was in plain sight, finally load thing I wanted.  Repeat for textures, accessories, ad nauseum, ad infinitum.

I keep saying I am going to pare down my runtimes to the stuff I actually use regularly, yet, they keep growing...

I think I need another hard drive.  LOL.

yup...heck, I'm busy stuffing more in...;) When you have a database just listing the stuff that's too big for MS Access to handle, you know you've gone overboard..;)

Some time ago, I seperated my runtimes by character and also by merchant. I have V3, V4, M3, M4 etc. Makes it easy to find things. I also keep all the readmes so I can look up where things are.

basicwiz ( ) posted Tue, 08 February 2011 at 10:54 AM

I've said it before, but I'll say it again... One word: PzDb

Works like a charm and has a searchable database. Fixes ALL of the above concerns.

My $.02

heddheld ( ) posted Tue, 08 February 2011 at 10:56 AM

I hate it when u think you know the name of what you want!! spend half an hour finding it(after the usual how the heck is it spelt) only to find you got the wrong name

poser is 50% searching , 40% fighting to get it all right and 10% rendering

hborre ( ) posted Tue, 08 February 2011 at 10:57 AM

Database is my salvation.  I have Brilliant Database which is the core of 3D Content sold @ DAZ3D except I can modify the interface anyway I see fit.  Although, it is growing too large to save everything under one roof, I can elect to split it up under different categories and maintain reasonably sized files.  Makes it easier than hunting through runtimes looking for content.

thefixer ( ) posted Tue, 08 February 2011 at 10:59 AM

It's not so much the looking for stuff I was on about, more the fact that I have so much of it that I forget what I've got.

I can find stuff well enough because I use sub folders, it's just that I ignore a lot of stuff because I forget I have it.

It's now $.04 since I agree with every word.

It's fun sometimes to go through the old stuff and make a render.

Cariad ( ) posted Tue, 08 February 2011 at 11:13 AM

I was sitting here the other night while my kid's dad was playing with Poser for a bit, and I was like, 'What is that texture?  I don't remember getting that!'  It was strange since he doesn't have the ingrained habits of going to the same items over and over that I have developed unthinking.

MistyLaraCarrara ( ) posted Tue, 08 February 2011 at 11:25 AM

whenever i'm waiting for a render, i tweak my folder organizings.

i've moved all my pp2s up to the cr2s and set up Scene Category folders, SciFi, Veh, Asian, BDSM, etc.  ....  but, leaving the props in their named set folders.

and i move all readme's to a folder on my desktop, to find them without drilling down to their runtime folders.

(pp2s moved to the cr2s don't work with undo. have to manually select and delete)

gotta luv the shrugging guy

With it you can organize your content as you wish :) and is free

Yes.  The exact reason I started a fresh set of runtimes when I upgraded to 2010 and install stuff as needed.

Yep but OTOH I don't have enough.  You know how things change as time passes and what was a great model/texture/utility some time ago is now not so hot?  I don't particularly buy into the latest human figure is best thing but I certainly feel a lot of other models and/or textures have improved dramatically since I first started with Poser.

I have too much stuff and it's the onw time my anal retentive ocd need for organizing comes as a blessing. I have things organized by model and then by catagory: pants, shirts, skirts, etc then when I need a new idea for a picture, i browse through different folders when i find something i like i make an image based on that.

I am a sucker for buildings both for inside and out renders. Gee that building looks better then the one I bought or tried to make myself last week or last month... It's called the housing bubble. I am hell bent to see if I can get my buildings runtime to burst.

Take for example the dream home series from Daz. I have rendered a lot and almost exclusively in the Nook, entertainment room and backyard. Yet I bought it for the kitchen and bedroom which I have yet to use in any render. Go figure.

I'm handling a 200Gb library just from P3dO, which - like PzDB, AL and the Poser collections - has its pro's and cons. In 4 external runtimes (girls, (other) beings, scenes and DS-Poser originals).

Is it too much? I don't know. Some old material is outdated for hi quality closeups, but still ok for background work.

Usually I'm wrong. But to be effective and efficient, I don't need to be correct or accurate.

visit www.aRtBeeWeb.nl (works) or Missing Manuals (tutorials & reviews) - both need an update though

The worst is when you realize that super awesome thing you bought but didn't install 30 days ago?  You bought it 6 months ago when it was at another brokerage :/  Or, You bought it on the vendor's site, and then saw it at the brokerage, and have 2 copies.

I currently have 3 zip files sitting on my desktop that I bought on sale over the holidays and have not even bothered to unzip them, much less install them. x.x
