Subject: Gamma Correction Wacros - use GC in existing materials

Since I found it to be too much work to apply all GC nodes from hand, I made a Wacro for me to do this. As I wanted to publish, I saw a new GC correcting shader from BB, which handled Specular in a different way. I liked what I saw, so I made a script for this as well.

Just download the ZIP and unpack it in your Poser directory - must be the main Runtime, or the scripts won't show up. Handling explained in the next postings.

Hi Uwe... I just downloaded (just out of interest, as I use Poser Pro), and although the folders are all there, the UserDefined folder is empty. Is this just me, or the same for everyone I wonder? I'm on Mac, which expands the zip file automatically. (Never had problems with zip files before).

True, I should have added the .py - files. File updated, thank you.

How to use it? If you go in the material room, select the material you want to change. Go on "User Defined", select GC for the first kind of conversion. Everything in the Diffuse color channel and the specular color channel will be connected with the proper nodes of the shader.

This is what you should get. You may change the Gamma in the lower node named "Gamma Value", obviously. If you want to make changes to Diffuse or Specular, you may use the Nodes GC5 and GC4, which are named accordingly. I used that setup a lot, and it worked for me most of the times. Not foolproof, though, minor changes are required for optimal results.

Here is what you get if you use GC2. This is a newer GC-corrected shader BagginsBill posted not too long ago. Specular is done with a single "Shine"-value, without a map. You will have to set this parameter manually, since I don't have a good way to transform the specular from the original setting to the new shader yet - I still try. Still, I like the speculars from this shader a lot, even if it's a bit more work to get it right. If you want the "One Button"-solution, use "GC" instead of "GC2".

So choose your shader. At the right, GC2 on the shirt. In the middle, no gamma correction. On the left, GC.

Comments, suggestions, praise and critique welcome.

Very cool, Uwe. I tried it out and it works great.

One small glitch - the zip file folder contains "runtime/python/posescripts" instead of "poserscripts" - the letter "r" is missing. This caused me some confusion after installing because the wacros didn't show up.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

Thank you very much.  Although I predominantly use PoserPro, never know when I have to go back to P7.  Thanks again.

Path fixed and reuploaded, now everything should be fine. (hopefully)

The wacros are in my freestuff as well. I will add the explanations made here to the zip as well this weekend, so that the people won't need this thread for it.

I hope that helps getting more people into using GC. Both shaders make things a lot easier, and works easily with most materials already there.

The script will do nothing if Alternate_Diffuse is already used. So starting it a second time won't do anything - and it won't try to gamma-correct VSS skin shaders.

Don't know if it either a Mac thing or a PoserPro thing, but they don't show up unless you change .Py to .py or small p in the extension.

Neither Poser Pro nor Poser 7 on my Mac can see the files unless they have a small "p".

Being a bit obsessive, I renamed the downloaded files without thinking before installing them, so I missed this problem!

Another glitch which I missed, mainly because I don't have a Mac and Windows doesn't care.
Ok, fixed, and made a note for possible later scripts.

This is superb timing :) I've been going through the gc threads this weekend but couldn't for the life of me figure out how to save the shader network.

Many thanks :)

I LOVE this wacro! Could I make a request? Could you write one that adds GC and AO?

Shouldn't be that much of a hassle. I will look into it next weekend.

Very impressive work... vielen Dank, Uwe. This saves me doing all this by hand, copying and pasting nodes...

this saves a lot of times. but dont forget that you will need to change a lot of settings. GC makes everything brighter. its different. so your previous shaders are designed for low lighting .here it is brighter. so the texture or diffuse value will have to be changed.

bantha ( ) posted Thu, 18 June 2009 at 8:04 AM

The diffuse value is already reduced by the wacro. Of course you still may have to fine-tune the shader.

I did not find the time up to now. I will see if I manage to do it today in the evening or tomorrow. If that does not work, you will have to wait for another week.

But I think I can do it today.

thanks

Diffuse_Value on the Diffuse node, which from the screen shot above I'm guessing is GC5_Diff.
