Subject: Should Poser drop it's own figures?

So here's the deal... Poser comes with it's own human figures, which apparently nobody ever uses. Everybody uses the DAZ figures instead. When it comes right down to it, if DAZ stopped supporting Poser, people could use other figures like Antonia, but really matters is who the vendors will support.

So unless Smith Micro really ups the ante on the figures, it seems like it would be in their best interest to drop their own proprietary figures and fully support the DAZ figures instead.

Just wondering what you guys think?

MagnusGreel ( ) posted Fri, 11 March 2011 at 5:23 PM

how about "not this again" use the figures or not. your choice.

just because YOU don't use them, does not mean others don't. I don't use daz figures. should daz stop making theirs? hmmm?

Why? DC makes money in either case.

And no one said you had to stop using the figures you already have.

Bad example...Truth is the first born son of Jor-El and Lara would never go back on his promise and quit protecting mankind.

Answer, No, but they should improve the quality of their models, and not just the female models . They need complete family like the had with Poser 5 . I'm still pissed about the Quidem deal not going thru.

I doubt SM will drop their figures. I use them. I like them.

I really liked the P5 people and used them exclusively to start. I only got V3 for a special project and then the base figures were available free. I did spend money on V4 because thats what the market seemed to be supporting.

I think people who make blanket statements like that should go to bed! I have always used the Poser figures more than the DAZ figures. So long story short, your premise is faulty!

I use the G2 figures a lot. They suit my purpose, they are easy to use and they give me good results. They are quite well supported by some good texture artists, notably Tempesta3d and Cyllan, and with the Ultimate Head Morphs available from RDNA (very cheaply), I can do almost anything I want with them. Plus there is faceroom support, and an excellent range of career-related clothes. So I would like to see more focus on native Poser figures, not less.

Back to the original question, Smith Micro (or whoever owns the Poser franchise next) should keep including content with Poser. Beginners should not be expected to buy the latest Daz figures just to be able to use Poser.

SamTherapy ( ) posted Sat, 12 March 2011 at 3:44 AM

No they shouldn't.  I don't use them much and don't particularly like them but included content is always good to have just in case.  Besides which, the older models are good as background figures and add variety to a scene.

Superman shouldn't quit.  Batman heeds a super powered partner now and again, Superman needs Batman to remind him why he's doing the job in the first place.

They could always offer the legacy content on Content Paradise. But I admit that is a valid concern.

I use them almost daily.

Never cared for the V's as way too many Poly's.

Liked the Lo Res version of every Poser version.

Alyson Lo res is still one of my favorites.

Never understood why they dropped Judy out of Poser 8 and 2010 Pro.

You know, I think the crowd here is so partisan that a SM buyout of Antonia would mean the kiss of death for her. If she was packaged with Poser there are a lot of people here who would do one default render of her face and say "Eeeww!" and cast her aside without a second glance (or a second chance).

I think it's great that she's truly independent and getting along on her own merit alone.

You think people are partisan AGAINST Smith Micro? Hey, I love Poser and actually don't mind the Poser figures. I do use them for background people a lot, and actually I prefer using Kelvin to  M4 or M3 when it comes to a black character.

To clarify things a bit more though, I don't have a problem with the Poser figures. I have a problem with the lack of support for them.

rokket ( ) posted Sat, 12 March 2011 at 6:20 PM

I don't own anything but the poser figures that came with Poser 8. I am probably the only one who doesn't like V4. I have her base, but can't purchase anything else for her, so to me, she's almost useless. I can do a lot with the included Poser figures. And I happen to really like using Sydney. I also get a lot of milage out of Alyson, Ryan, and Simon.

If I had a nickle for ever time a woman told me to get lost, I could buy Manhattan.

Okay then, let's turn the question around. How do we encourage more vendors to support the Poser line of figures?

SamTherapy ( ) posted Sun, 13 March 2011 at 6:24 AM

Make them more popular.  Many people were put off them by their initial appearance and lack of out of the box morphs.  Judy is so ugly the midwife slapped her mom.  The original Jessi is just plain weird with disproportionately short arms and a huge lightbulb shaped head.  Not much the average user can do about this without resorting to third party morphs and/or a modelling app.  Remember, up to V3, morphs were included in DAZ figures.

Posette was incredibly popular until DAZ started their line of products.  Now, whether you like DAZ and their products or not, the hard facts are most people prefer their models to the native stuff.  IMO, it's not just down to marketing and support, either.  The products are supported because they're popular.  Sure, there's generally a lot of available content when they're first released, which can only help matters.  SM tend to just throw a figure out there and hope it survives.

Addendum...

I don't really care.  They can do what they like.  I have no personal stake in whether their figures become popular or not.

My reply above was based on what I think they could do.  My reply here is my opinion about the situation overall.  For that matter, I don't care if DAZ's figures sink like a lead goldfish, either.

I'm not into porn and pinups, so I don't use DAZ figures. I'm mainly using toon figures and for my more 'real life' renders, I actually use the figures that come with Poser. At least they come with a good selection of normal clothes and can be used for regular everyday scenes.

No they should not drop them, there are still enough people using them. Thing is most people using them don't post there renders at all, since they're often of a different nature then what is shown generally when people use the DAZ figures.

Artwork and 3DToons items, create the perfect place for you toon and other figures!

Heck, when Medusa for V4 came out, I was looking forward to all the awesome pics

I'd see, and what did we get? Portraits, Pinups, and NMIATWAS. Many people do

renders of everyday living in either today's setting, or scifi, or fantasy. Many don't

post those types of images because they get mostly ignored. I did see a pair of nice

action renders with Medusa, but on the whole, it was disappointing. Those are the

"Gallery" type renders.

And I do like the Poser figures, they're just not as easily morphable as the DAZ line.

with Wardrobe Wizrd included in Poser 8, you can use all the stuff purchased for V3, V4, etc on the Poser figures, Yes ????

So more support not necessary....

However..I think they might as well drop them....BUT ... Poser concept was not so much rendering of the figures as is for images but to take the humanoid shape into photoshop, etc and then use to enhance as needed .... you pose the figure and then postwork the hell out of it.

I would preffer if they just made improvements on every new version on the previous figures, based on peoples comments

for example most people liked Judy's body but not her face so they could just correct that on P6 and include Judy 2 with it

OR include Yamato's AnAn with it which IS a corrected Judy (they would't even have to work it themselfs)

Also their figures should take advantage of all the new features of every new Poser version

Greywolf answered the question about what a gallery render is! Thank you for that.

Most of what I do are people in office settings having conversations, working on computers, operating the cash register, carrying a briefcase etc. Not art. Meant to illustrate, not to be admired. No comments required. So, it doesn't get posted.

Original Poser 6 Jessi is useful. Her odd-shaped head can be obscured by hair, and she has some of the best legs in Poserdom. Nice toned waist as well, although usually covered by clothing in my work.

I am the same. I have posted about 9 pics in the gallery that were 'noteworthy' of the place. I have probably 1200 renders that I wouldn't post there because they are 'boring'. And a lot of what I do is in preparation for a major undertaking of animating a full-length film, which is why I bought Poser in the first place. So I do test renders and short animations to see what works, and to learn the program. After a year with it, I've just barely scratched the surface. What BB and the others do with it is lightyears ahead of my skill and understanding. But I am getting there.

And I posted a pic with Sydney that I feel fits the bill. I think she is the easiest to use, and if you do her hair and the lighting right, she is stunning to look at.
