Just to show how much I love Pose2Lux...

I can drag out all my old stuff and it looks gorgeous ;). That's the LePalais model from Daz from a few years back. I've played with more old stuff of mine in the last couple months than I have the last couple years...hehe.

They don't look like the same models anymore at all, I think that is my other joy in all this, it breathes new life into things that had been relegated to the 'not up to date enough to use' category.  Makes me wonder how some of the other old Daz sets I have kicking about would look.

Quick Luxrender tip:

I apologize if this seems obvious to some people but if it hadn't to you, than it may be helpful ;)

Some of you may have noticed the problem with windows in some architectural sets. If there is only a single sided poly and a glass material is used, Luxrender ignores that area of the mesh altogether and nothing is rendered. Since they're made for Poser, there really is no need for windows with thickness, so a single one-sided poly will do. Luxrender however, has problems with this. If you're not adept with a modeling program, there's a way you can fix it in Poser if the windows are in a wall.

Load a single sided square from your Poser primitives folder. You can use just one for a whole wall of windows. Scale it however you need to so that it's slightly larger than your windows. Place it just a smidge behind the polys in the window. It may help to switch to top view and wireframe to do this. When your single sided square is placed, rotate it 180 degrees on the y axis so that its normal is pointing toward the outside, in other words, the opposite direction of the normals on the original window mesh (for an interior scene, the original window's normals will be facing inward and for an outside scene, they'll be facing out. Either way, the original windows normals will be facing the camera. You'll need to make sure that the normal on the single sided square is facing away.

When you run the Pose2Lux exporter, simply assign the same glass material to the single sided square as you do to the windows in your model. Luxrender will now render glass there :).

Okay, maybe Laurie can answer another window question.  I have no problems doing the trick to get the windows to render the glass as you mentioned above, but I am using the Haunted Mansion from Daz.  How do I get light to come through the stained glass in the windows?

Stained glass is a little different ;). For the stained glass in the one image I did, I actually exported the room, extracted just the windows and then brought that back into Poser and moved them to the back. What I didn't do (that I should have done) was forgot the flip the normals around. I fudged it by applying the same stained glass map to it and making the back side mattetranslucent and only the part facing the camera glass. I was gonna go back and revisit it again after having flipped the normals the correct way, but I got caught up in the LePalais image ;). What I got was not exactly what I was after.

Basically you can't use the single sided square trick with stained glass because the second plane needs the same texture map. I need to work out a way that it can all be done in Poser. A lot of Poser folks don't also model.

I'll get back to you on that...lol.

Might I suggest just taking the model into Poser. Click on group editor and create a group for the stained glass. Then click on Spawn Props. Select the newly created spawned glass prop. Take it to the group editor and reverse the normals. Delete any other extraneous props created from other groups and save the resulting work.

I know enough to do that, but I might also have to set up a glass mat that can be used for stained glass ;). I still haven't tested it all yet. But of course anyone else that wants to may and see what they come up with.

Just a note...if you do the above, you need to move it away from the original window mesh slightly.

I was thinking much the same thing Laurie, that an actual material was going to be needed for stained glass.  Especially to do it quickly, and ummm, I am one of those non-modelling types.  I have more than one app for it, but thus far I haven't had much luck with any of them. 

Now, the problem I see with that is that the cames on most stained glass windows done for poser aren't separate from the glass material they are part of the texture.  So when the light did pass through it they wouldn't look solid.  The larger ones in the Haunted Mansion windows are, so it might be something to test on.

Two questions (smirk out of many). I know that velvet material was incorporated into Lux a while ago. Has someone made a selection of velvet materials? I have some different sets of curtains that I would like to use in a Lux scene. In Poser, I've used one of BB's velvet shaders on them. Also, any ideas on a marble stone shader?

Well, to begin with we need a glass material that will take a texture map. I'm not quite sure how to set that up yet, since I'm not sure if the map should be in the kr (reflection - doubtful) or in the kt (transmission - probably the best choice). Either way I've tried it's not working however, so I may have to get my head together with Snarly on this one ;). Architectural glass has a kd node, but so far I'm not having any luck with it either. The only thing that's worked for me so far is putting glass on the window mesh and mattetranslucent on the duplicate mesh, which of course isn't optimal.

Liz, you should be able to use a texture map or any color at all from your Poser surface node on the velvet materials, so you already have the capability of making any color velvet :). If you want to use the Luxrender velvet shader, you're better off removing all the nodes in Poser and just sticking with a diffuse color or a texture map in the diffuse color only.

As for marble and things like it I plan to eventually make a selection of this type of thing, but first I have to understand LuxBlend and scattering (which marble will require) and there is only so many hours in the day...lol. Patience may be needed for that kind of thing ;).

Quick update on the site: Menu is done. Yay. It acts the way menus are meant to. And tomorrow, we'll have a whole Materials page done.

All the rest has been trying to get modules configured and set up and moving stuff around and cleaning things up (and 4 loads of washing... heheheheh) playing with Poser, now, turning off the cornea emitters... :blink:

re: stained glass:  in the Reality thread on DAZ Paolo mentions you can use Lux glass + a texture in the transmission layer to get a gel light pattern.  just offering that in case it makes any sense to anyone (it doesn't to me) (yet)

Okay, brain storming, not necessarily good as I am waiting for coffee to brew but... What about treating stained glass as a mix of the matte translucent (allowing for the needed texture map) and the either architectural or rough glass (to help simulate the imperfections that make stained glass unique.  I don't quite get how the mix works yet, setting up the two (or more) materials I get.  Bleh I'll figure it out.

That was the first thing I tried....lol. I put ["USE_KdMAP"] in the color kt line (which is the color transmission). Didn't work. Not sure if it's something with the .xml setup and how the exporter reads it or not. That's why I need to bump heads with Snarly a little on that one ;). Should probably be something like ["USE_KtMAP"] :).

All transmission is is light passing thru and picking up a color as it does. Such as what glass will do. Emission actually gives off the color and light and transmission is color picked up as light passes thru a material.

If I am getting what is meant it would seem to be a bit of workaround and not really what I am aiming for.

Can you post a link for us?  I admit maybe in my caffeine deprive brain it just isn't adding up currently.

Okay, read through it (have coffee now) and yes, while it is similar to what we are trying for here it's not 'quite' it.  Stained glass is sort of unique.  Really, it order to look realistic it needs to allow light to pass through it, have an inherent roughness and be able to take a texture map so we can use it on our windows from poser that use them.  I wonder if anyone has done a rippled glass that could be looked at too.

(Maybe really real stained glass will inspire me to learn that pesky modelling thing)

I know what you mean, where I live we have an inordinate number of old Victorian homes many of them have stained glass incorporated into windows, above doors, so I was hoping to be able to get out and snap some photos.  Or possibly go and bother the nice people at the local stained glass studio/supply store to let me photograph samples in there.

Always wanted to get into making it, but until I can get my workroom in the basement cleaned out that won't happen.  Kids + stained glass supplies = bad.  Since my 'studio' is currently a corner of the living room, I don't think it is wise to work on anything like that there.

it's definitely a messy craft, not to mention bloody fingers & glass splinters....but the results are usually worth the pain.  photographing it is another beast entirely.

Pottery, leatherwork, chainmail.  All messy, with the latter two sliced up fingers can be a problem as well.  Metal spurs are fun to dig out of fingers, really.  Why I started cutting my own rings, at least if they weren't cleaned properly was no ones fault but mine.

Latest stained glass test is a fail.  Can't seem to mix mattetranslucent with glass to get the desired effect.  Though the scene looks interesting regardless.  LOL. 

Might work it another way and let it bake.  If nothing else, I got a nifty picture out of it.

I am thinking Laurie is right and we need Snarly's help here.

This should work in Pose2Lux without any problem. There is no USE_KtMAP parameter though :-)

I'll see if I can work up a simple example.

Ok, this is a very simple example. A proper solution for stained glass is going to need more work, but this at least demonstrates the use of the Kt parameter.

This is a simple plane stood vertically in front of Woody (so that I can see that it is indeed see-through). Light is from a single spot light behind the plane, pointing at the sphere. You can see that the coloured pattern on the plane is colouring the light from the spot light, colouring the ground and the sphere.

Obviously this isn't very realistic at all - it's just a simple demo to show 'transmission' working.

This is basically the way it was explained over on the Daz forum, and  it works.  Not ideal, but at least it shows that an option is there. 

Now I need to try and fix Poser's library cause flash updated itself on me, uninstalled flash, reinstalled flash.  No library.  I do -not- want to have to reinstall Poser again.  Can't do anything with no library.

You'll need the lastest version of Luxrender. Visit pose2lux.com for all the poop on the exporter, a FAQ, the online manual and of course, the latest versions of the basic and Pro versions. The basic version is basically done and the Pro version is in beta but has more features. It also has, potentially, more bugs as well ;).

You can put the script in any folder, so long as it's someplace you can get to to run it ;). If you don't have Pose2Lux installed at all, get (I think) version 0.3.1 and then the 0.3.6 update. Everything's on the website I linked to.

If you run into any snags feel free to ask, goodness knows I do often enough and I have been playing with this for a few weeks. Usually asking about things we can't do yet, but every question at this point helps to let people know what needs more documentation or is wanted to be added as a feature. (Can I say, YAY!  Fog! again?)

To all XML Library material makers:

At some point in Pose2Lux's development I'll be overhauling the built-in material libraries, and also the example materials distributed with the script.

When I do so, I shall wantonly pillage and plunder any materials that have been posted here unless it's made clear that you don't want me to.

If you don't want me to use your materials then either PM me and say so (I'll not take it personally or hold it against you so don't worry!) or add a comment to your XML file saying so. Otherwise, I'll assume that everything that's been posted here by the original author is in the public domain.

Comments can be added as per the usual XML (and HTML) convention:

Comments are ignored by Pose2Lux, but not by me :-)

For those making XML files to help others, the use of comments is encouraged anyway.

EDIT: These comments apply to publication of the materials on the Pose2Lux.com website too.

Only got the one finished so far, but the latex materials are free to be pillaged to your hearts content Royston.  I was thinking about updating the file with some more colours and maybe some patterned ones though, so give a warning when you are going to start pillaging so I can make sure you have an up to date one to work with. :)

Do we use the standalone version or the plugin version for poser to render?

I got this error from the log that's in the render engine:

[2011-03-27 16:55:11 Severe error: 47] Parsing error in file 'LuxBall1.lxs' at line 17: syntax error

This is line 17: Renderer "sampler"

 

What am I missing here and what is it I'm supposed to download as far as luxrender goes?

 

I have downloaded the standalone. Is this what I am supposed to use? without the open CL (for now) Have nvidia card but would rather not tempt fate at the moment). grin

I have an opencl-ready NVidia 460-series (gpu-rendering) as well, but from all accounts that feature of LuxRender isn't quite ready for prime-time, so I'm avoiding it.

Forgive me again: Got the newest renderer... Question now is, Have the luxball scene ... Want to try it out for practice.I am attempting to export the scne  but it keeps telling me that not all of the maerial has been placed (I skipped the emitters) Does one do the emitters in the mat section or totally ignore it and ust hit ok?

You have to set up the materials on the materials panel. You may also export even if you don't and the exporter will give you that warning, but your scene should still export.

Emitters are set up on the emitters panel.

I found a velvet texture for my curtains. Unfortunately my shader choice for my Greek vase did not pan out but I didn't want to re-export. I used two point lights in this resized too 1000%.
