Subject: Movie Textures in Poser 8

mykyndryd ( ) posted Mon, 18 April 2011 at 12:03 PM · edited Wed, 29 January 2025 at 11:25 PM

Hi there. Great site.

I am a complete noob to this stuff but enjoying it immensely.

I have had Poser 8 for about a week now and the documentation suggests that you can add a movie or animation to an object in the materials room.

My problem is that whilst I can add the 2d textures node for movie and assign this to the diffuse color for the object, when I go back into the pose room there is no image.

I am completely stuck on this, can anyone help please.

Is it only certain objects that allow a movie texture?

I am running Poser 8 under Windows 7 Home Premium on a quad 4 with 4Gb Ram so should be no resource problems.

i am also getting the intermittent poser crash after startin a new file and deleting Andy - I don't have Chrome and I even uninstalled Google Earth but no luck as yet.

Well, save frequently as they say ...

Many thanks if anyone can help with the animation / movie texture though.

Regards.

Mike.

Is your operating system 32bit Win7 or is it 64bit Win7?

Is the movie in AVI format?  Are you applying the movie in a movie node (not an image map node!)

Do you see the movie showing on the texture in the material room?

Some node based textures do not appear in opengl, or they appear wrong.

Try a render and see what happens.

Movies, in particular, usually don't show in the preview window.  You might get improvement by setting your preview render settings to OpenGL/Use hardware shading, if the option appears in your preview render settings tab, but don't count on it.

use hardware shading

Hi. Thanks for replies.

I am runnnig 64 bit windows and ATI 5450 card with 1Gb DDR.

The movie clip I have been trying is .AVI and I have used the movie image node although, my layout didn't look as intricate as the one shown above. The movie definately shows in the materials room although very jerky.

I did try a render and I get a still image of the first frame. If I render to a movie however, it is just the blank object with no image.

I'll try to replicate the layout shown above.

Thanks again.

Regards.

Mike.

If the system is 64bit, then the problem is the 32bit codec used to compress the video and/or needed by P8 (which is a 32bit app).  If you can afford the extra RAM overhead, try loading the AVI into a video editor and save it out (use a different name!) as an uncompressed AVI.  Then try the uncompressed AVI in the movie node.

Oh, the node layout shown is for the special case of wanting a movie to start in frame 31, play for thirty frames, and then stop.  All you likely need is plug the movie node into the diffuse channel, or if it is supposed to be luminous, like pixie dust or a TV screen, plug it into the ambient channel.  I simply didn't have a simple movie setup in my Photobucket album.

Thanks Seaschnas - I'll give that a go too.

Thanks Guys. I was rendering to preview instead of firefly (doh)!!!

It doesn't show in preview which is a shame but it's a step forward. Off to have a play. Many thanks for all the replies.

Oh, if you apply the movie to a "billboard" prop, you might find it useful to make a JPG targeting image -often made using a frame of the movie- in an image map node as a temporary texture while you set up the scene.  This is a targeting image that I use for the pixie dust starburst movie, for example:

targeting guide

This can help a lot to get the movie billboard positioned/scaled properly.  Once you have that done, unplug the targeting guide image map node, and plug the movie node back in. ^^

That's great. thanks for that. A shame you can't view the movie in preview mode though.
