One thing to try is just messing around with a current texture using the texture editor. It seems scary, but it's not that bad. Try taking a current texture and mess with it a bit to gain confidence. To save a texture, just click on the triangle to the right of the preview screen in the Material Editor. This will bring up the textures. Click on Add at the bottom to save the new texture. Probally a stupid question, but how to you make textures? Or materials if you will...hehe...
