Subject: Ok, it's time to do something. Image challenge: Asteroid hitting a planet.

Hi all,

Let's see what you can do. Create an image of an asteroid hitting a planet from the view of space or from the planet. Post WIPs (Work In Progress) images if you like but definitely post the finals in this thread. Capture a moment in time, a location, a mood...

Post production in Paint Programs not allowed!  Carrara has a bunch of cool capabilites, glows, auras, motion blurs etc. Dig in and have fun.

Special bonus points awarded for animations.

Strut your stuff.

Looking forward to the cataclysm,

Mark

Cool Idea Mark!

Here is my WIP:

"Yara turned on the shield generator just in time! The Asteroid just entered the atmosphere and is about to annihilate everything in it's path!"

This is the setup, now I need to get animating :) Rendered in C8Pro, with GI and radiosity on. No postwork.

FYI - I'm in the process of changing my user name from Renderholics to 3DLust, so you will probably see it change in the next 24 hours.

Thanks :) Now I need to work on the asteroid descent and the explosion  - I'll show any progress I make :)

Hey Mark -

Have loved your Carrara tutorials in the past and would be happy to contribute, especially since I need to do just such a scene for a novel I've written.  Did you have a timeframe in mind?  (don't think I'll be able to get to this over the next few days, but over the next few weeks I'd be happy to post an animation and get some feedback).

No time frame. Just for fun.

Well, this is sort of a planet crash thing.  I'll post a bigger version in the gallery tomorrow (already posted my daily allowance).

Hmmm, don't think the crew will be able to rescue Enterprise from this one!

Attached Link: Carrara impact anim

Animation sounded fun so had a go. Very basic - two spheres (planet + atmosphere) and three particle emitters. Explode modifier bit to regular in shape, maybe better texture would improve.

I knew the earth was made of polygons! Nice shader animation.
