Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 21 6:06 am)
Whatever makes your searches easiest. You can merge all your Vicky's into one runtime or issue them into their own. There is no ironclad guideline. For instance, I have a runtime for each of my main characters although the base models reside within the main app's runtime. I also have a separate folder for hair, poses, and creatures. There is a specialized folder for Superhero content, as well as a projects runtime for one time use.

Can V1 use props and clothes for V2-V4? Perhaps that's what I should have asked.
Also, arent many poses and hair model specific? If yes, then how does having all the hair in one runtime help you find hair for a specific model?
Lastly, if anyone with a lot of content could possibly post a screenshot (for PC) of their directory structure, it would probably clear up a whole lot of questions.
Hair and Poses are fairly easy to tweak or convert to other models. So they can be put into a seperate runtime. I sometimes add a model name to the folder.. like V4, say, of the poses or hair, just so I know the base it was done for.
I throw V1 and V2 together into one runtime. V3, and SP3 have their own runtimes. V4 and her variations (S4, FF4, G4) should maybe all be in one.
I am hoping this helps and doesn't confuzzle you further.

OK let me see if I can piece this all together - I will reinstall everything tomorrow.
Separate runtime folders for:
2, V3, V4, Aiko 4, The Girl 4, She Freak 4, (S4 = Stephanie 4, FF4= (who is FF4?), G4 = The Girl 4?)
What about Stephanie 3.0 Petite? Where does she fit in?
And so for all the new female models, there are actually only 2 separate runtime folders needed?
Also, not sure what the Superhero model referred to above is? Is that a DAZ model?
Thanks in advance
Yeah, I am starting to get the idea that there is no one set way to do this.
I think I am just going to install content for the newest models only (M4, V4), and all of it will go in their own separate folders.
Now, in your example above hborre, if you have props from many models all in the same folder, how can you tell which props etc go with which model?
(I sure wish that each Poser object explicitly displayed what model it goes with. Might allow for better sorting and flexibility).
I always forget about Stephanie 4 because I never use her as a character. In the old days the figures had a set number of channels for morphs. If two morph sets used the same channels the set injected last would cancel out the first set. DAZ came up with a system to allow new channels to be added to a figure as neccessary. This system uses scripts in the figure to generate the channels. That is why the morph set need to be installed to the folder the figure is in and be initiated. Some clothing for the 4th generation figures may also have 'fit' morphs to make them fit the different characters. If the fit morphs use the system they must be installed to the folder the clothing is in. But the clothing itself doesn't need be in the figures folder. I hope that is clear and didn't muddle things for you.
Quote - Hi All,
I'm new and am starting to figure out that installing all my content into 1 runtime was a huge mistake. I can no longer tell what items go with what models. Gonna have to redo from scratch I think.
Doing a little reading of the tutorials, it seems that I should have separate runtime folders for V4, Stephanie, The Girl etc. (True?)
My question is, what about the various versions of each? For example, do I need a separate runtime folder for V1, V2, V3 and V4? Or can all the Victoria stuff go into one runtime folder?
For non character specific items like furnature and assorted props, are there any guidelines?
Many thanks in advance.
Welcome to Poser.
I have my runtime setup as all figures having their own folders so each Vicky has her own folder. Even tho G4 is off the V4 mesh, she still gets her own folder. I've had to break down all my hair models to their proper names where sometimes the artist will put their name on the folder so it made it hard to find the hair. So I went through all my hair and labeled them with their proper names. Then I grouped those up into their own hair folder and then in the Pose folder I put the textures broken down in 6 folders by alpha order under their own "hair" folder [makes is so much easier when looking to change a hair color!!].
I have so many hair items [200+] that I spent an hour or so rendering quick images of a model with a hair item and created a image folder so when I'm looking for a hair I can look at that image folder and see what hair I want instead of spending hours looking thru the runtime for the right one. I'm thinking of doing that with clothing items too but that might be a bit much :)
I have folders in Props labled V4 props M4 props etc. In Poses is where you're really going to need to be 'strict' in your housecleaning, all the clothing, all the hair, all the poses just gets to be one huge folder. So that's where breaking it all down to their proper figures NOW will help you a few years down the road when you start getting 30-50gigs of stuff in your runtime :) So under the folder I created as "poses" in the Pose file group I will have folders tagged as V4 poses, M4 poses, Group poses are those pose groups that mercs make dealing with both figures and you can't really break them down...you could but more work.
I had a Wing prop that I could never find each time I wanted it, so I created a folder called "wings" just for that purpose, so any wings I pick up go right to that folder.
Just remember that when you add new content you need to do your housekeeping and put them in the folders you have created so you'll have a hair pulling chore to do every other month :)

Make life easier on yourself. Visit my site Poser By Design and more specifically Click on the Using External Runtimes and Setting up an External runtime. I explain in detail the pros and cons of using external runtimes. And I have a zipped copy of my External Runtime Folder that can easily be edited It will save you all of the guess work on how to organize the runtime.
almost every product I buy goes into its own separate runtime.
that way I find the matching poses, cameras and lights for the thing much easier.
I aim to update it about once a month. Oh, and it's free!
what version of poser are you using. my method works best with the latest versions.
