Subject: Has anyone made a "Robot Monster" helmet for DAZ Gorilla?

Adding the skull face (poster version) for the gorilla is easy, but I don't know how to make a helmet.

Also Claudia Barret's hair and outfit would be nice. :-)

Claudia Barret ("A-lice") is a long shot, but there's a chance of her character being easier to duplicate than the helmet. Perhaps some person more talented than I will get inspired.

There is also a chance no one is familiar with this science fiction classic of unintentional comedy.

If I remember this correctly, the original movie had so low a budget, they couldn't afford the whole gorilla costume...;)

Could be done in any modeling program; a sphere, a cylinder, a little texturing...;)

Here's a quick and dirty version (was stuck waiting on a download anyway...;)

I did one a number of years ago, but never released him. I even did a morphing skull to go along with it.

Last year I got better reference material on the helmet, and was going to accurize it further.

It even has a number of transmapped electrical effects between the antenna, as well as the logo electrified text shown here.

Since I did all the morphs in BoneZ for the Daz skeleton, maybe I can just dump the morphing skull for it. (Its far less anatomically accurate than the Daz skull, and the Daz Skeleton skull also has killer textures already available.)

Love it!

Cage had some freebies, compatible with Poser 11 and below.  His Python scripts were saved at archive.org, along with the rest of the Morphography site, where they were hosted.

"If I remember this correctly, the original movie had so low a budget, they couldn't afford the whole gorilla costume...;)"

Not quite true.  The budget was $16,000.  They couldn't afford a robot costume.  The director/producer knew an actor who had a gorilla costume, so he hired that actor to play the role.  The director/producer didn't want a gorilla, so he added the diving helmet.

The movie grossed about $1 million but the distributor didn't pay the producer his share of the hefty profits.

I love it and somthing like that would help me to dust off the daz gorilla, let us know if you put it up some where.

Cage ( ) posted Sun, 22 May 2011 at 5:45 PM

Does the Daz gorilla have a "fat" morph?  Gorillas in the fifties seem to have been thicker around the middle.

Of course, I guess the strong male stereotype had a tendency to be thicker around the middle back then, too.  Hmm.

Great work Pakled and Garee- gorgeous graphic!

It amazes me.

I have the Mike 3 skeleton, but the skull doesn't have to be that great.

The big deal is the helmet. I've got the skull covered with 2 ancient downloads called Gothic Skull and Hell Skull.

I've retextured the Daz gorilla, and there are many good morphs for it that no one seems to buy or use.

Will check for a fat morph.

I'll upload my progress,  but I'm too dumb to do helmets and need some downloads, and they needn't be free, either. There could be a market for this thing for other lovers of science fiction comedy. Ro-man is a funny, popular dude.

Looks like a fun project.

Gareee ( ) posted Mon, 23 May 2011 at 11:44 AM

I was going to sell it at Daz as a cheap item around Halloween. The Bonez expansion for the daz skeleton adds a ton of morphs, and breaks out some bones,m as well as the skull with all it's morphs for individual use.

The daz gorilla really doesn't have the morphs he needs to make him look like a cheap gorilla suit. I was considering that as well as displacement map "fur" for him.

I'm not sure I even have that displacement map file anymore, but odds are I could improve upon it now.

After working close with Gorillas for about 2 years, the shortcomings of the Daz one always bug me.

There were two other 50's sci fi monsters I was working on as well. I wanted to add a few other accuracy corrections to the helmet. After my current project (Yep, I'll start releasing new stuff again.) Maybe I'll revisit them all, and just release them all in one bundle. Odds are it won;t have made sales anyway, since its a nitch item, but I'm sure it'd be popular around halloween.

A hundred quatloos to Pakled for the helmet (at warp speed)

Still working on textures. Haven't opened UV Mapper yet.

The DAZ gorilla absolutely has a fat morph, among other things.

I hope Garee completes his worthy project too!

Also, importing into Vue often solves weird Poser texture problems.

Well, tried to upload a render to the gallery, had a little trouble, it finally showed up okay, then it disappeared. My gallery was not updated, and 'Rosity said I'd used up my upload quota for the day with my non-upload. I remember when this used to be easy.

I give up.

Cage ( ) posted Thu, 26 May 2011 at 1:51 PM

It's a neat image!  :thumbupboth:  Makes me wonder if it would be worth loading my old copy of Vue 4, to play around.

I've had the gallery do that to me, too, where it counted a failed or rejected upload toward the quota.  It let me upload the following day.

Thanks, Cage. I'm still using Vue 5, which means I can't buy any new content (stuck with the same boring trees. I think my computer is too old and slow for 9.
