RG, thanks a million... :m_wave: Been looking for this for 2 long years. Was wondering what happened and had since given up and stopped looking... Thanks for making it available again! :m_bouncy:
If there was a huggy smilies, I would use it but I guess I will have to settle for a handshake instead. :m_handshake:

Good to see you're still around Bec! I appreciate your past support.
I'll gladly take the handshake ThunderStone. :) I didn't expect my site to be down as long as it was but once I got looking at it again, it wasn't too hard to restore. I also decided to fix the things that "bugged" me so the updated version is a little easier to use.

I was especially glad about the road maker... I wished I had Win XP but now I have Win 7 and the Tutorial help file won't open in Win 7... M$ did something to their help file system so all Win help file made prior to Win 7 won't work in Win 7... Go figure. Anyway, can you export the tut files out of the help file into something like pdf format and post a download link to it?
Thanks!

This stuff is so cool. I've used to create stuff for Bryce a few times over the years.

Thanks all - hope you're enjoying the programs.Good to see you are still here, Hubert. Woody forever!
Thunderstone, I did try the roadmaker help file on a Win 7 machine and even with the microsoft file you can add, the help doesn't open. So I converted it to html and posted it to my website. That should give you everything you need to know.

Thanks, RG... I'll take a look at it now!

This first image has a space theme: made using 3 Shape Magic models and one oval sphere. The textures are Bryce presets (Diamond Plate, Basic Windows, the 25th Ale Varient, and Volumetric Fire). The second image shows the models without texture. You can see how much a difference a material changes the look.

I love the way I can create roads and stuff... Haven't posted anything yet because it's just practice stuff. So handy too!

Rich,
I do have a question with regard to the Road Maker software. My goal is to create a realistic looking model that can be used to create a driving simulation movie (AVI) in HD. What are the limiting factors with regard to resolution that I should consider when starting this process so it is as realistic looking as possible when completed?
The HD movie will then be used as an input to our optical simulation software to predict optical distortion with various automakers glass cad designs before the actual glass design is manufactured. Sort of a predictive tool to prevent bad designs from hitting the road, or to prevent good people from hitting objects on the road that they cannot see. Currently we took an actual 640 x 480 video driving down the road which is used as the input. But we want to increase the movie resolution to true HD so we can obtain more information from the predictive results. I do not have an HD camera (true HD) available so I cannot use the same method to obtain the input video, also customer requests want us to customize the roads based on the vehicle use.

Vince,
I find the roads look best when viewed from a distance rather than close up. As you get closer, you see distortions caused by two factors: one, the road map generated from the bmp terrain tends to give a stair step look, which in Bryce can be mostly smoothed away; and two, the generated roadbed and center-line texture maps have jaggies caused by curving lines and they become more and more visible in closeups. Both these can be corrected to an extent by tiling the terrain so roads on a given tile are larger and have less of an elevation change, but it's a lot of work to piece the terrains and road together. Net, I'm not sure it will do what you are trying to accomplish. You you can make a couple of test roads and see what they look like but I'm guessing they won't work for your application.
If you want to talk more, you can send me an email via help@shapemagic.com I have done some work on a version that creates an actual 3D model that his more precise but it's far from complete.

I use to sell Shape Magic at 3D Commune but stopped in 2009 when that site shut down. Since then, Shape Magic has not been available. My support site also shut down around the same time. I was recently considering abandoning Shape Magic entirely, but after looking at it again and at all the free downloads and other programs I had written, I decided to resurrect the site and make it all freeware. So as of today, the following 3D programs can be downloaded from shapemagic.com:Shape Magic 2.1, Road Maker, Flag Maker, Shape Maker, Stump Maker. Also, a 2D program Funny Faces (2D) is available.
Several of these have been available before but others were never released. I recently went through and revised all the 3D programs to correct the face normals's which allows them to import more easily into several 3D rendering programs. I also made other changes to Shape Magic, so there's a new version 2.1.
Back in 2001, I posted my first program (Stump Maker) to Bryce free stuff here at Renderosity. Its descendant (Shape Magic) has come a long way since then. On my site, you'll also see that the vast majority of images were rendered using Bryce. I've been a Bryce user since version 2 and it's still my favorite.
Hope you enjoy the programs and models!
