Subject: Render Time Question

seanearley ( ) posted Tue, 31 May 2011 at 5:20 AM · edited Mon, 27 January 2025 at 1:20 PM

Why is it that doing a nude render is taking what seems like 10 times longer than the same scene with clothes on?

Is it because the skin is a hi res texture and maybe the clothing needed less time to render the texture?  Lighting?

Just curious. (In Poser 7, if that matters)

seanearley ( ) posted Tue, 31 May 2011 at 7:26 AM

Now that I am at it, why does an area render seem to take longer than a normal render too?  Even on restart. ??

vilters ( ) posted Tue, 31 May 2011 at 7:41 AM

Quite hard to answer without more details.

Are the clothes less resolution?
Les material zones?
Less textures at a lower resolution?
Les nodes?

An area render has to give the same result as the final result.
Area render or full render, all obj, all textures, all lights, etc, everything is always loaded to make the calculations.

IDL, IBL, AO, to get all the info, everything is always loaded.
Only final render time is reduced to the area.

In our minds, we expect it to be a "lot" faster but it is just a little faster.

Thanks.  That's good to know.

Guess I won't be doing any area renders...

vilters ( ) posted Tue, 31 May 2011 at 7:57 AM

Oh please continue
I do it all the time. Mostly for tests; And mostly for very complex scenes.

Useless to recalculate everything on screen to see how a light change will be in a corner. Or just change hair on a single figure.

Lots of RAM helps of cource.

The more complex the scene, the more time you gain for an area render.

Just to refine my answer: Full render or area render.
Both times everything gets loaded.
But, the actual render time = calculations = gets reduced to your area.

But to do those calculations, Poser has to know what is around that specific area.

So then maybe an area render speeds up later in the process?  I did a full standing character render, no props, nothng fancy, just hi res.  Then needed to fix the facial expression, so I did an area render on the face only.

The full render took about 2 hours to complete.

The area render on just the face took an hour and didn't even regester any progress on the progress bar.  I tried a restart and tried again, same results.

Doing a normal render now with the new expression and we seem to be on schedule with 2 hours, so at least it's predictable.

If the cooling is sufficient, it should not hurt anything.  I frequently have my workstations rendering for several days at 100% processor capacity.

Poser 12, in feet.

OSes:  Win7Prox64, Win7Ultx64

Silo Pro 2.5.6 64bit, Vue Infinite 2014.7, Genetica 4.0 Studio, UV Mapper Pro, UV Layout Pro, PhotoImpact X3, GIF Animator 5

As long as your computer is well ventilated there should be no problems. It is simply running the computer with a load for an extended time. If the machine feels hot I would run one of the temperature monitors and make sure nothing is getting too hot.

For animations I have run my system for several days, continuously.

There are other rendering options out there, even for Poser users.

There's the nifty Pose2Lux that SnarlyGribbly put so much time into, and it even has a GPU accelerated version.

If you have an Nvidia Graphics Card, there is another option that takes advantage of full GPU rendering, and that is Octane Render.

I use Octane Render more for renders nowadays, and get most renders in minutes instead of hours. Only thing, is you can't pose or anything in it, so you have to have your entire scene set up in Poser and then export it all as 1 obj file.

They have a non-time limited demo, and res is locked at 1000 x 600, but you can still get the feel for it.

This image too about 5 minutes:

Sorry should have added Duration 37 seconds!!!!!!!

Apparently Apple have a new system called Thunderbolt which may help in Render times .
