Subject: Before I start modeling for Poser...

I think I'm going to break down and actually start doing a bit of modeling for Poser/D|S. I think I'll start by making morphs, and/or modifying models I already have. The only modeler I've ever used extensively is Sketchup. But I've been diving back into Bodypaint 3D and I'm kinda smacking myself in the forehead over how easy everything was to figure out, so now I'm not scared of diving in and trying modeling in C3D. I'm thinking as a first project I'll modify a conforming clothing figure. On my end Poser-ready stuff D|S-ready stuff too since I use Advanced Library with D|S and all the Poser-ready stuff loads into D|S just fine.

Here's how it's working out in my head:

  1. Copy the relevant OBJ to a working folder.

  2. Modify the new OBJ in C3D and save.

  3. Copy the relevant CR2 and modify it to point to the new OBJ Should this work?

Or do I have import/export issues to worry about?

Yes, there are some, but they're readily dealt with by using Spanki's Riptide plugin (of which there is, or at least used to be, a free version).

yep the simplest way to import and export from C4D while preserving point order grouping and material grouping is with riptide. you would shudder to hear the way we used to have to do it before spanki developed riptide (involving uv mapper or the truely agonizing process of using poser's own grouping tool) C4D's native import export does not preserve point order and only allows one to export one type of grouping and splits seams on that grouping.

Yeah thanks I have the latest version of Riptide.  Is that everything?

I can't make heads or tails of C3D modeling yet, lol.  You think it would be easy to just start copying and moving edges but nooooo.  :)

you might want to take a look in the C4D forum Right here at Renderosity, there is a wealth of knowlege there, and for basics of modeling in C4D C4D Cafe is a treasure trove of video tutorials from very simple to advanced modeling techniques.

Thanks Will.  I did just that and I got my modeling done, but I'm stuck on "Poserizing."  I can drag and drop the OBJ I made into DAZ Studio just fine, but I can't make the whole modified CR2 thing work.

Maybe the Poser forum is better for this stuff?  I copied and edited the original CR2 to point to my new OBJ, but when I load it into D|S, it doesn't appear.  There's another, unmodified OBJ the CR2 points to, and that loads in fine.  My part doesn't.  There are quite a few options in the Riptide exporter and I don't know if these settings are the problem, or if it's something I did in C4D.  What I really need is a step-by-step tut on using C4D & Riptide to modify the OBJ of a Poser product and make sure everything exports correctly.

I think the first thing I'm going to do is try to import and export the OBJ with Riptide without touching it, to see if that works.  If it does, I know it's something I did while modifying it.  If not, I know it's probably exporter settings.

Okay, I just imported the OBJ with C4D's native function, not Riptide.  The CR2 loaded into D|S with it just fine, but no materials.  Then I tried Riptide, and the new CR2 loaded fine too, and with materials all in the right place.  So now I know it's something I did while modeling.  Maybe I can fix this by merging my modified OBJ with a freshly imported copy?

I've started over and am narrowing down the problem.  The first time through I was still learning the basics of the modeling I had to do and I did a lot of copying the mesh and didn't keep very good track of what I did.  So I started over and am paying more attention to what I'm doing.  The model is a helmet with a plume.  I want the helmet without the plume so I delete that part of the geometry and patch it.  Thing is, any new geometry I add isn't showing up when I load the modified CR2 in D|S.  All the old geometry shows up fine, materials and all.  So the helmet has a hole where I patched the geometry.  I don't know how Poser materials work all that well.  Is this like with a morph, where I can't add geometry?  Do I have to re-do the UVs or something?  The simplest answer would be that I need to assign my new geometry to a material, but I don't know how to do that, or even how to check to see what materials are assigned to which polys.
