WARK!
Thus Spoketh Winterclaw: a blog about a Winterclaw who speaks from time to time.
(using Poser Pro 2014 SR3, on 64 bit Win 7, poser units are inches.)
Some spam posted here (by Windows 111) in a Bryce forum thread:

Aren't your programmers able to do something about these bots posting what must be hundreds of messages in one go? I would have thought that a simple flag could be set when a member posts more than say 100 messages a day, indicating that it's probably a spambot. At which point you could have it automatically block any further posts pending a check by a human.
As it is, this site appears to be remarkably vulnerable to these mass spam attacks.
Steve
Maybe they ought to consider changing the forum over to simple machine which has a good bot beater. But then again, it would mean that they would have to get rid of the blues. On second thought, they could devise a mod to stop the bots from registering in the first place.

your kidding right? lets see. how many spammers do you seein a week right now on this site.
now. take that number and look over the history of the site.
erm. ok.. thats 1 this week. over the history of the site... erm... less than 100? in 11 years...?
vunerable? far from it! this site is actually one of the best for NOT having spam. I can show you sites that get 10-50 spambots a day attacking.. and they are not as high profile as RO is.

I don't dispute your figures, but I've never seen this on sites such as CG Talk, for example, and I'm there more frequently than here nowadays. Which doesn't mean it doesn't happen, just that I haven't seen it, and that's a pretty high profile site. Not on C4D Cafe either, probably the world's largest C4D site.
In any case I stand by my comment: while you can't prevent small-scale spamming, it should be possible to prevent these mass spams like the latest one, where it seems as if every forum may have been spammed, leading to a very large number of messages being posted in presumably a very short time. A simple count of posts-per-day with an automatic block would stop it before it got too far.

I was wondering why the 3DSMax and PhotoShop forums seem to get hit the hardest and I came up with a possible reason.
This is just a theory but it seems like the spammers just start at the top of the forum list and work their way down(Alphabetical order)…So it would make sense that the “3DSMax” and “ADOBE PhotoShop” forums would always get hit.(They are first in the list)
Again…it’s just a theory.
Lol…perhaps a dummy forum should be created before the 3DSMax forum as a trap for the spammers…If something gets posted in there, it’s probably spam, and can be caught quickly…lol

Hawkfyr, that would be a good idea except, the bots don't just stop there. They go after the whole schemaboard. What is needed is a way to stop the bots from registering or sending them into a loop til they can no longer post and move on; the later will impact the forum, the former will simply just keep them from posting and not impact the forum. Either way, I don't think the programmers' skillset are up to par for the task. If it were, then we won't be seeing these type of spams in the forums or blogs.

combo of first on the list and keywords. they know that Max and Photoshop are popular, so the Bot will seek them out. other keywords are gallery, help forum, etc.
The techs definitely have the "skillset" to combat this BUT things are put in a priority category and at the moment there is much ahead of this problem. There are a few simple things that could be done immediately but I'm not in agreement with them because it would require all "real" members to take extra steps and I don't want to anything that would discourage real members from posting in the forums.
simple one would be to require all new users to be limited to 5-10 posts then reviewed by a Mod.
then any spammer gets caught with minimum disruption
also you could link the sign up to one of the anti spambot services such as http://www.stopforumspam.com/ who would automatically weed out any known spambots...
Here's one that looks like it's in the proper place but it's not and it's in this thread:
http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/showthread.php?thread_id=2831365
I suspect a spammer when it's only one post and it has key word in bold at the end.
Spambot must have been listening on the conversation in here...

They're really sneaky, the ones that were posted by Mairaj also looked like they were in the right place and looked like it was possibly a legitimate member making it, only this "member" always made many posts on the same day in many different threads always with a link to the same website and only changing a few words in the accompanying comment. It's only after seeing a couple of those posts by the same member that you'd realize it was spam.
