Subject: You Think Alyson is Ugly, What About Ryan ?

mathman ( ) posted Fri, 26 August 2011 at 7:25 PM · edited Wed, 20 November 2024 at 8:42 AM

There's recently been discussions about Alyson, that she is ugly, but that there is a lot that you can do to "beautify" her.

Ryan is also very ugly, however in his case he is very hard to fix. Especially that dreadful pouty mouth of his.

Has anyone been able to do anything good with Ryan ?

rokket ( ) posted Fri, 26 August 2011 at 7:35 PM

Only used him as a bad guy. I kept him bald and made him a Sith Lord in one of my renders which is posted in my gallery. I haven't tried to morph his face as of yet.

If I see just the heads, I can't tell them apart.

If you morph Alyson in the face room to male gender, she is Ryan's twin.

I wouldn't quite say "twin". The mouth is still better than Ryan's.

I've seen much better looking characters as student WIP's on various 3D threads but Ryan is the worst-not even really human looking IMO.

I have made a V4 morph just in case I ever wanted to use them together in a scene.

I like P6 James.

Ryan is no oil painting, but he plays very well in the face room and he has lots of morphs. I haven't tried to make him handsome, but he makes a credible guy in a suit.

True. James is very realistic, but it is difficult to get rid of those hooded eyelids.

Ragtopjohnny ( ) posted Thu, 01 September 2011 at 8:45 AM

I actually use the face room figures only now that I have learned custom morphs on faces.  Relatively simple to do, not that difficult.

Just took someone like me a long time to learn it because I was used to drawing all these years, not working in a 3D head format, LOL.  But those figures mentioned aren't the best ones.  James, Simon, and Jessi are IMHO with Poser.

I haven't seen the recent Poser people, but having the P5 and P6 figures I can well believe anything bad you say about them.  I do, however, think Don from P5 is a pretty good generic male figure, apart from the "bollocks trapped in zip" default expression.

actually I don't think any of the figures are ugly and useless.

but I tend to want realism, not an ideal. think along the lines of actual people, not fashion models...

Which is why the original Jessie is useless, since nobody has arms that short unless they're deformed.  And an overly large weird shaped head.

And Judy without extensive morphing is fucking ugly.  Really, really ugly in a "I don't know how to model a human face" ugly.  Then again, so is the default V4 for pretty much the same reasons.

Do Ryan and Alyson have empty channels for character injection?

i haven't studied their internal workings much.  still trying to sort out the magnets dependencies.

I would love to package characters for TY2.

Now I think about it, I think my - some time ago - description of V4 is better suited to Judy:

Judy has a certain classiness about her, more mature.

V4 is more character creator friendly.

I am making a male model and took a long look at James today. I never noticed how long his legs were. They aren't proportional to his body, which is a shame, as he's one of the faves in the office. He's practically a giant (or at least, an NBA star).

He can be made to look passable. I'm not much of a character maker but I got this from him. I'm sure some of you who make characters regularly could do much better.

That's the best Ryan I think I have seen, but he still has those awful pouty lips. He always seems to have this look as if his mouth is full of rocks.

mackis3D ( ) posted Sat, 03 September 2011 at 7:37 PM

The "best Ryan" has eyes like M3 on loading when he has no textures... but I agree the character face is done well and original. There are some dials that can reduce the pouty lips. I always thought that Ryan's ears are weird - almost Spock like.

Yeah ok the eye map sucks. It was the morph only I was showing off. I don't have any textures for ryan except what came with him and i wanted blue eyes instead of gray. By the time I saw the eye texture rendered I didn't want to run yet another render. (I had trouble with the lighting)

What do you mean by "pouty" lips? Perhaps I'll fix them and offer this for download.

I think one thing that may help all of the Poser people is more realistic skin textures. Or a program or Python script like Texture Converter to use some V4 textures on them. Come to think of it, I'd like to see a Hair converter script like that too.

I agree the poser people need better textures. Maybe somebody could remap them?

wardrobe wizard works on hair. It's what I did in that shot. It turned the hair prop for m3  into a conforming hair for ryan.

No, but Ryan's does.

Eric Walters ( ) posted Mon, 05 September 2011 at 3:25 PM

You are quite poetical in your descriptions! HAhAH!! " A bag of smashed crabs!

I always though Ryan looked like he just bit into a really bitter lemon, while his mouth was full of pebbles. With a ski mask on-he could almost pass for human!

I never thought that about V4- just that she has a doll like face rather than a realistic one. Luckily she is easy to morph. I've seen some fantastic likenesses of real people using a morphed face and body.

When I started trying to morph her into a likeness of a real person-I found that her eyes were on the huge size-compared to most real people. Check out StudioVartanian for examples.

I've yet to see any of the Poser People made to strongly resemble real people- although they can be made to look more human-like.

Miki2 and 3 are among the best from SmithMicro. James is also humanesque.
