Subject: how to create bum files

hunglong ( ) posted Wed, 22 August 2001 at 8:43 PM · edited Wed, 27 November 2024 at 5:50 PM

How do I convert image files (jpg, bmp...ect) to bum (.bum) files? Thanks.

Poser can do it for you. Load the JPG in the Bump channel and Poser will convert it (unless you're using the ProPack).

err... I'm using the Pro Pack. Bummer!

From what I heard, PPP can use jpgs as BUMs.

For the people NOT using PP (like me) it might be helpful to know that you can convert jpgs to BUMs in Poser. Just load a simple prop (the cube or something) and apply the jpg as the bump map in the 'materials' settings. Poser will then alert you that this is not a BUM and ask you if you want to convert it now.

I find to get better results and some degree of control if I first use a paint program and convert to grey-scale and adjust as desired with more detail.

What about going the other way. I wanted to import a poser guy into Bryce and, of course, it doesn't recognize the bum file. Photoshop doesn't recognize it either. Is it as simple as converting the color texture to black and white and doing a negative?

Unfortunately, it is not. The BUM conversion is some sort of weird emboss effect, and there is no trivial way (like channel operations) to reverse it. I wrote a filter called "GreyBump" for GraphicConverter which performs exactly this (BUM back to greyscale) with some minor loss of quality, but unfortunately it is currently Mac-only. I'm considering possibilities to eventually port the feature to PC, but I can't promise you anything in the *very* near future, I'm afraid...

MartinC, you're playin' my song, man! I got all ready for the usual let down when I saw "unfortunately" but surprise, surprise, Mac-only is the phrase that pays. Sorry, I started channeling a DJ. So I'll go to the link and check it out. Thanks. deci6el
