Subject: OT - Font woes

SamTherapy ( ) posted Tue, 25 October 2011 at 5:43 AM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 3:41 PM

I have around 3,900 fonts installed - yes, I know it's excessive - and they're giving me problems.  I can't access them all in Photoshop, nor can I delete them in Windows.  Explorer closes down when I try to open the Fonts folder.   Everything was OK until I went OTT on the amount of fonts.

I have an app called Font Picker, which is pretty good but it has a few drawbacks.

That said, it doesn't actually allow you to delete fonts from the Windows/Fonts directory and it doesn't show all the fonts in there, either.  As I said, browsing to the folder as normal makes Explorer shut down so I'm pretty much screwed.

Does anyone know of a font manager which will:

a) Show all installed fonts
b) Let me delete - really delete - the ones I don't need.

BTW, I'm on XP Home SP3.

1. If you copy and paste the font OUT of the font folder, and then, go back to the font folder and delete it, it will uninstall, and you'll still have the font.

  1. I swear by The Font Thing.  You don't even have to have the font installed in your font folder, it will open a folder with fonts in it, and you can see them all, right there.

Plus, it's free.  It's the best price.

I wonder if you could do it through a command line thing? Simply use DOS mode and delete them that way. It won't make explorer choke at least. Of course it won't allow you to see them first but if you know which ones NOT to delete, you could gt a bunch and then install your favourite ones again afterwards (assuming you still have the installers for them of course)

I didn't know there was a max to the number of fonts you could safely have on your system? O.o Then again I only have 1135 fonts at present. that's nothing :)

Just an FYI about fonts.

You don't have to have a font installed to use it.  Just open the font and minimize the window. It will show up in your graphic program for you to use. When finished, just close the font window.

I use a font viewer that allows me to view both my installed and uninstalled fonts.

I keep a folder of my favourite fonts on an external hard drive and access them with the font viewer. I think mine is called "Printer's Apprentice". I've been using it for probably 10 years.

+1 all the way!

I do a lot of graphics, and "The Font Thing" is 100% the way to go! It's a "must have"!

My compliments...

I would open the Windows folder in explorer and right click the Fonts folder and select information. That will give you number of files and total space used.

Going to CMD prompt seems worth a try.

Apparently fonts can become corrupt - maybe that is the problem. You might try TweakUI XP which is supposed to have a repair font folder option. I'm not sure if it will repair or detect a damaged font of it's only intended to fix problems with the folder itself though.

You also might see if you can access the folder in Safe Mode and delete fonts that way. If not, then the command line may be your only option. I'd try making a copy of the folder, delete everythig in the original and then copy back only the ones you really need - no gurantees that won't destroy the world so set a restore point beforehand.

Word of warning. Be carefull which fonts you delete. You need some of them for your os and some software. You might want to uninstall/move them rather than delete them just in case.

I use nexus font. As long as it's open, you can enable/disable fonts on the fly. And it's free ;).

Thanks, all.  I'll definitely look at the Font Thing and the Tweak UI thing.

@ mark - I know how many fonts I have and how much space they take.  That ain't the problem.  I need to delete a whole load of 'em and so far I've been unable to.

@ David - Oh, my aching sides.

If you do not already have a solution you like, I would like to mention you can manage the fonts from the control panel.

MikeMoss ( ) posted Wed, 26 October 2011 at 12:53 AM

Hi

My first try would be Control Panel as Wcbncal said but if that and none of the font managers work for you.

Log into SafeMode and then see if it will let you delete the fonts you want still in control panel.

In either case, if it will allow you to, copy your whole fonts folder to a backup location before you start deleting anything, better safe then sorry.

You can reinstall anything that you have to from the backup folder.
