Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 24 8:11 pm)
I tried to answer the question several times and erased my answer each time. This is an incredibly complicated question. I'm not talking about the question "How to do human skin" - I'm talking about the question "Is there a tutorial on how to do human skin."
In a word, no there is not.
And a tutorial on the subject for PP2010 would be very different than one for PP2012. A tutorial that covers ultra basic shaders (5 nodes or less, not counting textures) is of little value, although I wrote one a long time ago. (Look for UBSS)
On the other hand, if you don't actually mean to ask for a tutorial on how to build skin shaders, and you just want to have good ones, not know how to make them, get VSS PR3 or PR4 if you only have PP2010. If you have PP2012, use the several shaders I and others posted at RDNA in the dozens of official P9/PP2012 threads there. They work with VSS as well for easy application.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
As you go back in time and read older threads, you have to believe less and less of it. Poser has changed so much in just the last three years.
Consider this quote FROM ME in October 2007:
Quote - I almost always use depth mapped shadows, but ray-traced comes up once in a while when needed. Then there is Ambient Occlusion (AO), which has two variants - light based, and material based.
If I read that today, I'd point out this person is an idiot.
I never use depth-mapped shadows anymore, and I never use AO either. I use ray-traced shadows with lots of nice blur dialed in for indoor (large) lights, and I use IDL.

with all the new features, it might be possible now to make realistic skin with procedurals
-except for the puckery bits, i can't imagine how to do that with procedurals
and dynamic hair eyebrows. was up most of the night experimenting

From an outside perspective, I'd just like to add that sometimes the 'look' you are going for can be achieved through multiple prossess. As mentioned above BB's and other's skin shader setups can achieve what you are looking for. It just takes patience to learn a bit about 'why' and 'what' is going on with those changes. Especially in reguards to P9 and PP'12 with the subsurface addition.
But what get's forgotten, is that no matter what shader setup you might use to 'improve' upon the texture you are using, some textures just WON'T look right to 'your' eye. And that is what is most important. Don't worry as much about what others think, as long as you are happy with it. Everyone sees things differently.
Back to my main point, multiple processes. Sometimes taking a so-so render can turn in to a gem by a few postwork adjustment. One way you can make almost ANY skin 'pop', is through postwork. And it's easy!!! In a nutshell, without hyjacking the thread, using multiple duplicate layers in a postwork program (GIMP, PsP, PS, etc) and using different blend modes can improve upon a lot of images to 'your eye'. It just takes some playing around and having fun.
Now keep in mind, it's not the 'solution' for everyone, but it is a good starting point on learning what a few extra minutes can earn you what you might have in your mind. I won't explain in depth here, but if interested feel free to PM me and I'll try and help.
Sorry if this post wasn't relevant to the discussion.
Anyway, take care, and have fun!

I need a skin shaders for Dummies book lol. Unfortunately my school does not have poser or vue installed on there computers.
You'd think The Art Institute would have the best technologies available for students..
So far on my campus I've seen 3ds max, maya, udk, unity, after effects.... Pretty much all of the big name software companies.
Thank God Smith Micro offers student discounts =)
Im not sure if DAZ 3D does too or not.
But anyways I need to know how to achieve colored skin on my characters for Poser Pro 2010 or 2012.
I need a dummy friendly guide lol =)
the simplest way is to use the Diffuse_Color for each material zone of the figure. another way would be to tint the texture map you are using for the figure with an image editor like photoshop or gimp

i like the warmer skin tones. which is kinda ironic, since i'm lighter than dandruff.

Poser has a HSV node inside the materials room.
You can adjust Hue, Saturation and Value via that node.
Use the same texture to make different skin tones if required.
Or adjust only one, the lips for example.

P8 and PPro2010, P9 and PP2012, P10 and PP2014 Game

Im sure BagginsBill will see this =)
Is there a step-by-step tutorial on Materials/Textures for use in Poser Pro 2010 or 2012.
Im happy with the results I get but if theres a way to improve the look on my characters then I would love to find out how.
