Subject: MakeObj on Windows 7 64 bit

Cage ( ) posted Wed, 16 November 2011 at 3:57 PM · edited Mon, 05 August 2024 at 8:36 AM

I'm trying to run MakeObj, from the Poser Free Stuff, on a Windows 7 64 bit system.  I keep getting an error reading, "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect."

Has anyone been able to run this fine Poser utility on Windows 7 64?

Probably not what you want to hear, but it does not run here either. Seems to be a bit too old for W7-64.

Oh, bummer.   I guess that happens, but it's always a sad event when it does.

Thanks, bantha.

If you really need it, run it in a VM. No idea if the efford is worth it, but I think there are free versions of VMware and VirtualBox - both should be able to do the job.

Guys? a quick google reveals the answer. see the link, it's missing C++ runtimes. the link explains and has links to relevant packs.

Hrmpf?

I admit, I did not google this time. I had a couple of programms which I cannot get to run ( not with the same error message, though ), and I just expected it would be the same.

Good that I'm in error here.... Thank you, Khai.

Ooh, thank Khai.  :woot:  I did Google the error message, but found a lot of instructions about trying to trace the sxs error, which I wasn't able to follow effectively.

Excellent, excellent!  Thank you!

Except... it's not doing the trick.  I've tried both of the x64 installers, and the one x86 installer which still has an active link.  None of them seems to change anything.  I still get the same error from MakeObj.

I believe you want the 32 bit version of the C++ 2005 redistributable.

I would check your system through the add/remove prograns in the control panel and see what you have installed. c++ and microsoft frameworks.

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=3387

right click on the exe file and look at properties. That may tell you what version of C it was compiled with.

Checking the MakeObj properties, I don't see any compiler details listed.

It looks like I have both x86 and x64 versions of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable installed for 2005, 2008, and 2010 versions.  For 2005 I have 8.0.59193 in x86 and 8.0.56336 in both x86 and x64.

But I'm not sure what any of that means, for the purpose of trying to get this application to work.

I'll try the download.  Thank you!

A bit funny: Makeobj seems to work on my Mac using Wine 1.2.2.  It was possible to load an obj-file and resize it. I really don't know what the program can do, so that's all I tried.

markschum ( ) posted Thu, 17 November 2011 at 3:09 PM

the event viwer in administration tools may give you a more detailed error.

I would pm Anthony and ask which compiler he used .

I just downloaded makeobj, and tried running it under Win2k (sp4). Nothing, no window, no error message, no running process, nothing.

markschum ( ) posted Fri, 18 November 2011 at 4:52 PM

for the record I downloaded makeobj from freestuff and it ran on my machine under win xp 32 bit.

I recompiled the exe file using C++ 2008 (rebuild) and got no errors. I tried the exe file and it started no problems.  Sent it to Cage and same error as the original program.

(the project files are in the zip)

I may be able to do a trace and see what files are being used but that may take me a few days.

I wonder if it is a simple missing c++ library issue or something in the 64/32 bit selection process.
