Subject: Weird fog problem?

MikeMoss ( ) posted Thu, 17 November 2011 at 9:44 AM · edited Sun, 01 December 2024 at 12:45 PM

Hi

I'm using a fog pane, and no matter what I do, or how far ahead of the character the hair figure always appears to be ahead of the pane.

In this image the fog pane is far ahead of the figure but the hair isn't affected by the fog.

Fog

In this one the whole figure has been moved in front of the pane.

Fog 2

Anyone know what's happening here?

I've had a probably related problem in the past where a bird that was supposed to fly behind the figure always appeared to fly through the hair no matter how far behind the figure it was.

But in this video the character starts in the distance and walks toward the camera through the fog but the hair always looks the same.

Check and see if there is an ambient on the hair. That is all I can really think of.

LaurieA ( ) posted Thu, 17 November 2011 at 9:56 AM

Yeah, a lot of hairs have ambient in the settings ;).

Sugestion,
Put some dust on the fog plane> Granite? Spots? Noice? Turbulence?
Perhaps blend with a cloud node?
Yeah a cloud node blended with granite or turbulence....

Is that a transmapped hair?

Also : Check preview render settings for multilayered transparancy setting.

I kinda think this is because the hair is set to be ignored by raytracing, that's another common thing with poly hair.

Quote - Also : Check preview render settings for multilayered transparancy setting.

That matters if you're working with preview engine, but not for firefly/sreed rendering; and if you ARE working with preview, then it won't be the raytracing settings (raytracing is not used in preview).

If my memory is correct Mike works in preview mode.

Hi again

It does have to do with being in Preview Mode.

When I render it with Firefly it looks normal.

I don't get why it treats the hair different then everything else in the scene.

I've messed around with the settings but I can't seem to get it to work in Preview.

If I can't get it to work I guess I'll have to use basic render on it until the point where she emerges from the fog and then switch to preview and fade from one to the other so it doesn't change all at once.

If anyone has any idea about how I can fix it please let me know.

Mike?
You are using Poser9 right?
A transparant square  ? At what transparancy and color?
And it is a transmapped hair right?
Post your settigns,
I"ll try it in 30 min or so.

Grrr, i get both

I load a figure with hair from the library.
Put a plane in front at 0.5 transparancy ( with a cloud and granite blended on)

All is well.

But.
Now I select figure, duplicate, and I get the second one as you see it????
Pretty strange huh??

I can always reproduce it in Poser9 and in PP2012.
Reported to SM.

But I have a temporary sollution for you.
build your figure and add the hair and save your figure with hair into the figures  library.

If the hr2 is embedded in the figures cr2 it will react normally and stay dull behind your fog square.

Can you check this on your side?

Thanks guys it's late but I'll try that out tomorrow.

And I'll post my setting etc then too.

The hair is not duplicated it is loaded directly from the library, but there are two of them.

I use two so that all the hair doesn't have to move in the same direction at the same time.  Both are parented to the head.

I'm pretty sure that it works the same with only one, but I'll check that tomorrow too.

As I said I once had a problem where a bird that flew behind my character's head flew through the hair no matter how far behind it was.

It wasn't an illusion; you could see it enter the hair about half way back from the front when viewed from the front even when it was 10 feet behind the figure.

I never did figure that one out.

Hi

That worked, I saved the complete figure with hair into the New Characters folder and then started a new scene.

The hair appears to be behind the fog pane just like the rest of the figure.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Very good Mike,
So glad it works OK for you now.
And I also see you put some variation in the fog..

Looks nice good Job.

It's a preview mode problem. The hair use transparency and the fog plane also does.

The preview mode is not sorting and puting the transparencies in the right order. Depending which transparency is rendered first, fog and hair, the result is correct or not.

If you load the hair first and then the fog or the fog first and then the hair the result is different.

With more transparent planes or objects the result is even more unpredictable.

The final render (firefly) handles transparencies in the right way.

I uploaded a reproducable scene to SM.

Whenever the probem hr2 is embedded in the figures cr2 it works OK.
When the hr2 is loaded seperadly, it is as Mike discovered.

Found the same the same thing happening with dynamic hair BTW.

Hi

Ok next time I get into it, I'll experiment with that and see which way works.

I'm guessing that the fog has to be there when you introduce the figure since I think I did it the other way around before.

It's natural to get all the work with the figure done and then start on the special effects.

But If I have to do the fog first I can.

kawecki ( ) posted Fri, 18 November 2011 at 4:41 PM

Turn off the transparency of the hair and set the trans map image to none and the hair will appear propérly behind the fog

kawecki ( ) posted Fri, 18 November 2011 at 4:46 PM · edited Fri, 18 November 2011 at 4:46 PM

OpenGL is unable to handle transparencies in a correct way, what can do is limited to only one transparency in the path of a ray

vilters ( ) posted Sat, 19 November 2011 at 4:32 AM

Sorry kawecki,
I have to disagree on this one.

When a transmapped hr2 is embedded in the figures cr2 and you put a transparant plane in front it of your figure , it works, every time.

load a figure cr2, load a hr2 separadly, and it does not work.

Load figure cr2, load hair hr2, save the combination in the figures library.
Load this saved combinations cr2, and it works when you put a transparant plane in front.
As I and Mike have demonstrated.

Now close Poser, start Poser again and this time load the plane first and after the plane was loaded, load the cr2 with hair and see what happens
