Subject: shape an object with other objects?

mman ( ) posted Sun, 01 January 2012 at 2:05 PM · edited Wed, 26 February 2025 at 4:38 PM

I am currently trying to make adjustments to an object to change its shape in several minor ways. The changes I want to make are numerous and some involve a lot of detail. I have other objects that already have some of the traits that I am looking for, but I don't want to either meld several objects into one, or cut and paste specific sections to my current object in order to acheive the desired outcome. I also dont want to add any extra polys to my current object. I only want to change certain parts of it to match as closely as I can to the shapes of other objects.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a program or process which will morph my orriginal object to that of the other objects. Even if it would only morph to fit to a single object that would be helpfull. I'm no excpert when it comes to 3d sculpting so any extra help would be appreciated.

I see you have asked this question elsewhere, without success. I don't think there is a program that will do what you envisage. If you can post a screen shot or preferably, where you want to get to.

I suspect there is a simple answer to what you want to acheive rather than this morph/sculpt buisness.

I appologize for that. I did ask something along these lines in the 3ds max section but it seemed like an impossible task using that perticular program, so I figured to ask again but this time search for an entirly new program to achieve my goals.

What I'm aiming to do is create a set of fruit themed charecters through a series morphs applied to the popular victoria and micheal charectors. I have some fruit shaped objects that I would like to take attributes form to create morphs of. I don't just want huge fruit with faces and legs, I want to try to get something a good deal more interesting.

I can go into more detail if needed.

There is a Mesh Deform modifier in Blender that may do what you want.  It is very processor intensive so I've never used it.

A computer AI will be needed for such tasks.  Which means lots of computer programming.  I'm surprised it hasn't been done yet, as computers now are very powerful.  But AI programming was more popular in the mid '80s when computers were only 8-bit.  Who knew?

There is the shrink Wrap  modifier in Blender. With some tweaking that might work.

I see, thats a lot clearer, and sounds very interesting. I can't really offer a solution, though as has been said, blender may well have something.

What sort of poly count is involed?

mman ( ) posted Mon, 02 January 2012 at 10:10 PM

I don't think I'm going to require anything close to AI to manage this task, I think shrink wrap may work just fine. As soon as I figure out how to use it I will have to give it a try.

My only real concern about shrink wrap is, is it possible to effect part of an object with the shrink wrap modifier and leave the rest of the object alone? For Example I want to try to make a sort of banana people as part of my project and I need to conform the heads to be banana shaped at some parts: long pointy chin and split peal cranium sort of things, but leave certain part rather human looking: eyes, lips, and mouth.

As far as poly count, I'm not all that certain...

You can just effect only part of the object. You need to give it it's own vertex group. The Shrink Wrap modifier has an option for vertex group. You can play with the mode option but the project seems to work pretty good.

It's not impossible in 3dsmax.  In fact, if my understanding of your question is correct, there are probably 3 different modifiers you can use, and probably 2 or 3 plugins I can think of offhand that can do it.  Not to mention maxscripts.  There's a "wrapper" maxscript for free that does this, and several others free plugins.  There's also standard tools in 3dsmax 2010 and higher in the Graphite Modeling ribbon that can do this, including the "Conform To" tool.

If you haven't found a solution you like yet, and you have 3dsmax, contact me and I'll try to help point you to the right tools in Max to do what you need, as efficiently as possible.

Here are some links that might have some use for you in 3dsmax to do what you need...

**Mesh Deform Maxscript **

Fitter Script

Geometry Projection Script

Terrain Conformer

Conform Wrap

Plus, don't forget the Conform tools already in 3dsmax 2010 and above, under the Graphite Modeling tools.

Hope this helps you get the results you want.
