Have Poser 8 and following the directions from the Help manual to save a pose does not work.

I go to the Pose section, select my character, click on the + sign to add to library and it puts a pz2 file in the library. And when I try to apply that to my character it wants to replace the whole scene with it. Obviously I'm doing something wrong.

Could somebody tell me how to save a pose from one character that I can then apply to another character? 

You need to ensure you're saving to the Pose Library.  Sounds to me like you have the Character Library selected.  That saves a cr2, not a pz2, which would account for Poser wanting to replace your scene. 

When the box comes up for the name, there is a 'select subset. ' gadget.  Pick the items you want to save.

Your workflow should be:

Select your posed figure.

Make sure you are on the Pose Tab of your library (Circle at top in posted image).

Click on the Plus at the bottom.

 

You will get a 2nd popup window to name your pose and to select the body subset. Refer to image.

Select Subset and in the hierarchy deselect GROUND and make certain that all the pertinent body parts are selected for the pose.  Yes, you can save separate body parts for partial poses.  Click OK and you should be fine.  If you do not get this sequence then you are doing something wrong.
