Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 09 3:46 am)
the main difference between the 2 units is, the Windows version is optimised for close work (think monitor to desktop) and is not subsidised in cost. (yup thats right, the Xbox version should cost the same as the Windows one... Games sales and MS subsidise that sucker...)
the Xbox one works at 2-6ft ranges.
for MoCap only I'd lean towards the Xbox one, but for more general use, I'd look at the windows one.. but someone mentioned it's possible to hack a Xbox unit to work as the Windows Unit. but they did'nt give any details...
Hi,
Thanks for the feedback.
Many hours of research have revealed that:
ipi studio put the drivers etc into the Xbox kinect to use on pc.
the capture motion is great with ipi studio ( the ipi recorder is free of charge, and can record 2 kinect units or Up to 3-6 cameras).
My xbox Kinect should arrive next week. I will let you know my experiment results. Watch this space.
At moment I use rotoscoper by Philc to do my animation, hard work, very fustrating.
I downloaded the ipi studio (they give 30 days for the trial period - download), I traced something and send it into Poser as .bvh to G2 Sydney, Gosh it worked fantastic, brilliant. Amazing - are you getting the drift of what I am saying?
Please let me know anyone else out there doing what I am doing.
why not give this a try

I've done some limited work using the X-Box unit with drivers and software from the "Hack Kinect" open source group. Works fine. I can't justify the price for the iPi software. There are a few things to think about though. Facial recognition isn't gonna happen. Fingers or toes either if this makes a difference to you. I have no experience with the desktop Kinect. You can use an adapter from Nyko if you need to work closer than the "sweet spot" 8 to 10 feet that the Kinect likes to work in. The Kinect is essentially two USB cameras and a mic. One camera is IR and the other colour. The combination of both images is how the MoCap is done. Simple concept when you think about it but that is why no fingers, toes; or faces. The newer desktop uniy may solve the facial issues but that is only a guess baed on it's shorther focal length.

Can anyone advise on the Kinect sensor which is for the xbox. Is it true that with the hacks (dependancies) and other software we can produce motion capture animation in poser 2012? I believe that 'Motion Capture Assitant' (Andre O'Brien) created for Poser Pro 2012 can do this.
However my question is if I buy the Kinect sensor for Xbox, and also the power supply - is that all thats needed to start me on my way?
I know microsoft have launched Kinect for windows yesterday, but the price tag is £205 compared to the kinect xbox "79 plus adapter £8.
Any advice would be greatly appriectiated.
