Well, I liked it. Currently taking a lot of courses in graphics communication, motion design (I'm an old guy in college by night) and being a former underground comics publisher, not to mention a child of the 60s - my high school was located smack in the middle of Haight Ashbury - very reminiscent of a lot of psychedelic light shows and stuff, well, looks familiar and like I said, I LIKED IT!

And they're right - a lot of work went into it.  More would be welcome.

Thanks it was intended to be as creepy as possible! I work in a sales job, which I am now cutting down to 3 days a week so that I can persue what I actually want to do (either animation or video editing) What type of courses are you doing? I am interested. Thinking of doing a flash course myself.

Flash - though have been using SwishMax for years, Typography, Motion Design, and have had 3 semesters of Illustrator, a lot of self study animation - go waay back to the 80s on Imagine 3D (long defunct - but one of my favorite programs of all times, especially since I managed to REALLY know how to use it) - also these days a lot of Inkscape too (great freebie), marketing, graphics communication, of which much of the above - Flash, Typography - InDesign, PhotoShop, etc. - really figure in there.

Like you, in the process of starting to do what I want instead of what I need to - giving up long time bread winner proofreading, copy editing, medical records review - just got a real estate license and will work also 3 days a week, now that things are starting to look a tiny bit brighter. Working on that college degree I put on hold some many years ago - and create a lot more. As I did so long ago before I "got a real job" - hey, my wife insisted!

I love what you did there.

Also, I belong to lynda.com. They have a lot of great courses - and most especially I recommend the Flash courses. The community college I go to dropped the Flash course the semester I enrolled and the local university - UCDavis - cost 4 times what the city college had offered and was cancelled. One of the Illustrator classes I had the whole semester was practically a carbon copy of one of the courses at lynda.com, so after I found that out I joined - paid the annual rate but they have monthly - around $25.00 I think - and haven't looked back.

Being a research nerd type by nature, I find it great, but I must say I'm very excited about the interaction with buyers and sellers. Spent too much time inside - job and hobby IFO a PC. Just the other day I had a half hour look at the sky - it was amazing - LOL!

Anyhoo, lynda.com is one of many self paced study venues. There are others, some of which advertise here on R'osity.

Lol that is too true! Brilliant I am going to go for Lynda. Are there any qualifications that can be obtained..or more of a working knowledge?

Great advice all round.

Does anyone know much about Adobe accreditation and whether it is worth going for?

Or any other accreditations, basically to prove I can get the job done?

With these two days available each week I intend to learn something and get the hell out of my  job/chicken****outfit ;-)

I got the "real job" too thanks to the missus at the time. I am now 33 years old, 2 girlfriends on from her and currently have a lovely fiance and child ;-)

Hopefully the real job for me, is not as far around that corner as I once thought.

Just going to have to be tight with the £'s and get the young one into it asap!

As far as qualifications when one finishes a course a certificate of completion is completed, FWIW. Of course, one could and - I'm sure some have - just clicked through the courses and get the same certificate.  Equivalent to going to but nodding off in every class in a "real world" situation, I guess, the way some teachers grade (Hey, I've seen this personally).

Depends on the student how much you get out of it and being able to demonstrate a certain level of proficiency (see below) and it being known you gained said proficiency at lynda.com seems to have a certain amount of gravitas.

Last summer I spent 2 months studying InDesign on there and as a result was able to do some work for a (since failed/halted) venture 3 friends were undertaking, but they really liked how quickly I could mock things up AND they paid - $$$! Who knew?

I have the complete Adobe CS5.5 package - that student ID card comes in handy, but I haven't looked into Adobe accreditation - much. Might not be a bad idea but my poor overworked brain has been hammered of late with details about contracts, disclosure, fiduciary responsibilities, etc.

Also, congrats on having a "little one(?)" in your life. Hell, even most of my grandkids are grown or at least almost. I'm glad the active parenting days are over, but I could be "grandfather" forever - or even longer, LOL!

andrewbell ( ) posted Thu, 01 March 2012 at 8:23 AM

It feels like I have been a parent forever, and it has only been 18 months! How easy is in design to learn in your opinion?

Larry F ( ) posted Thu, 01 March 2012 at 5:16 PM

The courses that lynda.com offers on InDesign are VERY thorough, with plenty of handholding straight through. They have several. I only went through 3 of them all the way, but looking at the rest of them they all are really up to snuff, for beginners or more advanced.  You have access to all, and you can plow straight ahead or go piecemeal through.

I knew nothing of InDesign but after completing only part of one course, "Essentials" it may have been but I'd have to look, I was off and running.

I did finally up my subscription to Premium, wherein I get access to any course's working files that are being used to demonstrate whatever they're teaching, was easier than using my own files because I kept forgetting where I put what.

Hey, about that parenting thing, I wouldn't trade the experience, love my kids to death, even though we don't always get along the best, but the grandparenting thing is several orders of magnitude more fun - pure fun.

IMVHO, that is.

Flashed back to my Hippie days there! Reminds me of the type of psychodelic stuff they used to project onto the walls of the old Burton dance halls.    Scary stuff!!!

Thanks for all your comments... Have been very busy and getting back into poser! A new video to follow, hopefully soon.
