Subject: 32-bit and 64-bit Program Files

romangirl ( ) posted Fri, 24 February 2012 at 7:32 PM · edited Sun, 22 December 2024 at 4:23 AM

Just before my old Windows XP computer died, I transferred my Poser files to an a new Windows 7  computer via an external drive .  Poser 7 worked fine until the new computer crashed because of a download manager hangup during shutdown.  I was asked if I wanted to restore, and I did.   Now, although the files seem to be in place,  I can't open Poser 7 with the Poser.exe icon.   I think there is a battle between two Program Files, one for 64-bit, and the other for 32-bit, called Program Files (x86).  I noticed the icon was only  in the  (x86) Poser  7  files,  so I   copied it to the 64-bit Poser 7 files.  It told me I was missing a file.  When I copied that file, the (64-bit)  Poser startup icon disappeared. This keeps repeating.   I don't know how Poser 7 got into both the 64-bit and 32-bit files.   I can't open Poser from either of the Program Files.   Should I delete the 32-bit files?   Or should I just delete all of the Poser 7 files, and reinstall P7 from the cd, the updates, and my own runtime additions?

P.S.  I just determined that my computer is 64-bit.  Any advice is appreciated!

Well, if you had Poser 7, then that software is 32 bit only. It will run on a 64 bit computer, but it is still 32 bit. It should be in the Program Files x86 folder.

If it were me, I'd reinstall Poser 7. It's easier than trying to find what's causing your problem which could theoretically be anything..

And, as a matter of information, only the Pro series is compatible with 64-bit systems.  As LaurieA posted, P7 will only work with 32-bits.  I also suggest a complete reinstallation.

Thanks for your advice!  I will reinstall into the 32-bit folder.

Bifore you do that, move it to something like C:/Poser (backslashes don't work here, so forward slash substituted)  and see how it works.  I've found that Program Files is the worst place to install a lot of software in Vista and higher...

Hmmm interesting.  I'll try that.  Thanks!

I've reinstalled Poser 7, and can now open it.  But when I try opening one of my characters, I get "find null."  I've done a search, but can't find null. So it won't open. Where can I find null?  Couldn't find it by googling. Thanks!
