Subject: Tutorial for Creating Body Hair for Poser Figures

Glen ( ) posted Thu, 19 April 2012 at 11:59 AM · edited Sun, 02 February 2025 at 11:05 PM

Hello everyone!

I've been searching for a tutorial on this for some time, but have found nothing. I'm looking to create full body hair for M4 and V4 in 3D, so no trans-maps or textures, nothing like that. There are a couple of realistic pubic hair props for V4, (e.g. Ralph 3D's props) and that's the level of quality I'm hoping to achieve, only for M4 too, and for the whole body; legs, arms, chest, underarms, face and so on. It'd be good if I could have different sections that could be added individually, for example: You want V4 to have hairy forearms and groin, but nowhere else, so you only add those sections.

The only 3D programs I have access to are AC3D and Poser Pro 2010, so I'm hoping I can do this in either or both of those programs. I'm not so good with the hair room in Poser, only for making grass. If I'm to make this hair in that, I'll need a step-by-step tutorial, if that's possible, please? I can make reasonable looking grass, but that's about it. The hair doesn't have to move, it can be a static prop (like the Ralph3D ones) as long as they look right and parent properly.

I just think these figures would look much better with the fine, downy like hair that people have pretty much all over their bodies and I'd like the option to include this, if possible. If I manage to make this work well, I'd like to release it and see what others can do with it.

Many thanks for reading! :)

I've always wanted to do the eyebrows and lashes in dynamic hair ;). I've already done armpit hair and chest hair for Mike...hehe.

I'll have to check out those tutorials I'm interested in that as well as I want to show a human changing into an animal so need togo from hair to fur over several senes.  as wel as morphing into the animal which I figure is much more difficult. I do have a morphing program so may do a little video cheat on that as long as I can get a really good 3d animal to carry the story with out too much expense.

I think I saw some thread in this forum about a shader that instantly makes these body hair. I think it was done by Bagginsbill.

Body hair can be applied as black and white map multiplied with texture. Map is easy to create using printer with scanner, razor and face like mine (se avatar).

Thankyou, Mary, I'll check those out.

Shuy, would the hair not appear flat though? I thought the only way of getting 3D hair was to make 3D hair, or am I missing something?

You can add them to bump/displacement map as well. Chest or arms hair are usually flat. Pubic or armpit hairs could be more realistic if they are created as 3d prop.

I was busy last time and did not finished it, but I tried to make transmaped armpit hairs as dynamic prop. It was made with few one sides planes (quite low res 8x8 12x12) little bit folded each plane had separate transmap. I've seen something similar on toon figure. I'm not sure but I think that it was Gosha.

I get the feeling that dynamic eyebrows would need at least two groups, or at the very least some serious styling ;). Eyebrows grow up near the nose and start turning down at the top toward the outside. But there are hairs underneath on the outside that grow up from the bottom and meet hairs growing down from the top. I really hope that made sense...lolol.

Yes the eyebrows need more styling. And perhaps might work better if the face had triangle poligons so the ends taper off rather than just stop.

Dynamic hairs depends of polygo size and shape. Maybe some prop, similar to skullcap, (browcap?) would give bettter results.

I was thinking of perhaps making some eyebrow props for dynamic hair ;)

If you make a prop, make sure it has the face morphs you will use so the hair follows the face.

Allison and Ryan both came with body hair "caps" if you use those models.

There is a discussion at poserplace that includes body hair and beards as well as various techniques for making hair.

Make prop dynamic cloth and select all as constrained group. It acepts all body morphs.

Does dynamic cloth work well with hair? I've been meaning to try it but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I tried doing that with judy's fur coat that came with poser and crashed the computer. Tried again when I got a better computer. It still crashed. I need to work with smaller articles of clothes.
