Subject: Poser Photbox

I am currently using a fantastic little program Photobox for Poser....it  uses  a supplied render dome with light presets which make full use of Posers indirect light system...the only problem is that when i apply reflections to surfaces, the render dome is showing on the surface of the materials and objects as i have pointed with the arrows...which of course is not the idea!...is there a way to avoid this?...

the render dome should not be reflecting on the object surfaces.

I think you misunderstand - you said the opposite of what the point is. The render dome with IDL is the strategy where the idea is the environment influences reflections and lighting and is directly observed in the camera, and you don't have to do anything extra to get them to agree.

What you describe, unseen lighting that mysteriously provides light without ever being actually seen, is called IBL and has been around for 7 years. You don't need any of the modern stuff for that - get Poser 6.

IBL is adjustable as well, meaning you can choose to light one side more than the other, or put different colors in different quadrants. Olivier published images to use in IBL for this purpose back in 2006 at runtimedna.

One other thing to know - I published a free environment sphere long ago that does the same. You didn't need to pay for this.

There are about 15000 free images you can use with it.

Oh - after my rant I forgot to tell you how to do it.

EDIT - I originally wrote how to do it here.

But - I just tested and it doesn't work.

Something's wrong with the interpretation of the "Light emitter" switch.

Hmm. Just to see if I could do it, I did it.

I cannot imagine why you want to do this, but here's how I did it.

I have a free object in my web site called GenIBL. I used it to convert the free Doge palace HDR equirectangular image into an IBL.

I then rendered with the IBL and also with the EnvSphere. They produced roughly equivalent light after tweaking the IBL settings.

Here is the setup using a wide-angle camera.

Here is the render with the EnvSphere including all reflections from the environment.

And here, the same but now lit by the IBL instead of the EnvSphere. I still used IDL here, so that it is actually IBL+IDL, not IBL+AO. That's why it matches.

Anyway, I really don't get why you want this. It looks totally wrong to me. But there it is.

No reflections of the environment sphere because there is no environment sphere. But the quality of the light is the same.

Thanks for your reaction...the first image of the red panel van is excatly the results that i am looking for!...with a shine like that!...

but it is still not clear to me what excatly is used to achieve those results...what light set precisely?...an environment sphere?...with extra lights?...

can you please tell me again excatly what i need to achieve this?...

thank you.

GRRRRR. Google changed the UI. I guess they think they're helping by making sure nobody knows how to operate things. It took me a moment to figure it out. This is so stupid - so irritating.

All the way to the right of the zip file there is a tiny down arrow. Apparently that's more convenient - to look 20 inches away and click on something the size of a sesame seed. Stupid jerks.

I am preparing a new page of instructions on the environment sphere, Sheedee. Will point you at it when it's done.

yes, the red van looks very good.  these car renders look better when using the poser curved backdrop IMVHO.  trying to render over the hdri is usually disapppointing because I can't find any big ones (19200X9600) with which to use a longer focal length.  but if it's true that a multiplied jpeg will work o.k., maybe somebody has giant jpeg freebies somewhere.

Here - read this.

In there I give you a Poser scene file already set up, and a link to get the HDR image you need to have to use that file.

The file is all set so rather than me explain what to do, you can just look around in there and be surprised at any changes you make probably making it take longer or look worse.

Once you successfully render, you should re-save the file so it gets recorded with the path to your copy of the HDR image file.

will give it a try.  genuine fractals (demo version) can enlarge these things without too much edge blur.

MN - I didn't make that for you - you already know how to do all this.
