Subject: Too much Jack!

I need African male characters - I don't much care what figure they were made for as long as I can use it in Poser. But many of the characters available have this very similar look. I found the cause and his name is Jack. At 3d.sk, a website where many merchants seem to buy their photo resources, Jack is the subject of the most comprehensive photo resource set available for a Black male. In fact it is the only really comprehensive Black male set. And that is why those sparse eyebrows, that stubble texture, those lips, that mark on the neck are  shared by so many Black male characters for Poser. There just aren't a lot of alternatives, and it is really frustrating me. I would like Jack-free African male characters please!

Detail things like eyebrows and stubble and body marks all can be added and removed if you know how. I would look up some texture painting tutorials that don't rely on photographs as a base. They'll give you the tools you need to enhance the photo textures you buy and don't require that you be an expert photoshop user or anything like that (though that helps I guess).

I was thinking I would have to do that. I have even tried, and got the Wacom tablet and everything. The skill is apparently necessary, judging by my results.

I use a Wacom tablet and potoshop to do things like this. If you really want to get the details down, that is really the only way. If you want to speed up the process you can try a merchant resource for lashes, eyebrows and things like that, but they all seem to be for females.

Yeah, the dirth of ethnic characters and textures is really annoying. But I'm suffering from the same thing you are...lack of skills ;). I can do a clothing item real justice with a texture, but a skin texture is a whole nother animal...hehe.

Disciple did a tutorial over at DAZ on changing skin textures with subtones that might be useful, Nanette...

Thank you those links and suggestions. The subtones idea seems particularly promising. Even some respected artists darken skins with the diffuse node and that always looks like paint to me.

For me, the best dark skin out there belongs to G2 Kelvin.
