Subject: what do you think of motion comics? Is anyone here making them?

Just curious.

I made one and would like to make another one if I wasn't so incredibly slow at putting images together. When I made mine, I used a trial of Photoshop CS4 Extended and its animation timeline features. Now that the 'regular' CS6 appears to have the timeline, it will be easier to do it again when I eventually upgrade.

Just like art, whether or not I (or anyone else) likes them depends heavily on the quality and any features the comic has. I would recommend anyone making them at least try to add music and word balloons so it's not simply a slideshow.

I too will get CS6 when it is out of beta.  Maybe I'll give a motion comic a shot one day.

Very cool... certainly if done well.

It could end up looking like 1970's style Hanna Barbera cartoons... although, to be honest, that would also be pretty cool, in my opinion ;-)

Love your Avenging Angel comic by the way Estherau... that is definitely cool ;-)

Glad you like my comic (mine isn't motion comic at this stage by the way). I intend to get back into it again in a couple of months. I've missed doing it but I had a lot on my plate.  Hehe, hanna barberra.  Hadn't thought of that.  But motion comics seem pretty popular at the moment.

I think Marvel's recent Nova motion comic is the way it should be done until we get more animation in them. It's a much more cinematic experience than your typical motion comic.  That said, I have always thought of motion comics as half-assed cartoons. If you want motion, do motion. It's like watching animation take a giant leap backward when I look at the available motion comics.  Despite my views on it, I do think the tech is in its infancy still and will hopefully develop into something truly worthwhile someday.

Just checked out that Nova motion comic, and I see exactly what you mean.  It does make one look though and keep looking.

this is better.  I just went here http://marvel.com/digital_comics and clicked on a nam comic without an icon.  the motion just helps focus a viewer without any animations.

I'm planning on turning a script I've been writing into a motion comic, with an alternate print version. It's actually the reason I started building Lucas to begin with. I'm hoping to incorporate voice acting as well, but it just depends at this point.

I just realized that the comic I mentioned above is not a motion comic but just a ken burnslike effect that can be turned off. Its quite clever though.

I will love to see what you come up with.

I had never heard of Nova before Teyon mentioned it, but that's by far the best motion comic I've ever seen. Most use a Ken Burns effect as Esther said, and are not nearly as animated as that one. Thanks for the link Teyon.

It's much easier to make a good-looking motion comic than full 3D animation though; it's easier to adjust or fix anything in postwork and takes far less rendering time. If your goal is to tell a story and not showcase 3D, motion comics do the job nicely.

Just my opinion too though.  :)

I recently restarted  My childhood hobby of collecting comics book DC/Marvel/Darkhorse, and reading them on my Android tablet now that they are all digital and so easily stored& preserved.

For me personally the appeal of a good comic is the amount of  high quality detailed artwork crammed into each panel.
IMHO these "motion comics" always skimp on artistic detail  making them looked rushed an unfinished to my eye
just my personal taste mind you.
