Gad zooks go for the DSL or Cable modem option. Ditch your 52kbps service. I pay $49/mo for my DSL line with Bellsouth. Downloads take seconds. I upgraded my browser it took all of 32 seconds to DL from Microsoft. Especially if you have a second phone line for your internet connection this is a no-brainer. Get your second line yanked drop your ISP like a bad habit and jump to DSL.
Thanks for the responses. Cable/DSL would be nice, but right now the price is a bit out of my league. I just need to find something cheaper than what we're using and that offers more service. EarthLink is robbing us at $24.95/month. They raised our fee and have reduced the services. We used to have 50MB of web space, and now they only allow 10MB per mailbox, whatever that means, and it all has to change before October 1. Yikes! When and if DSL comes down in price, I'll make that change. I know the speed of DSL is nice, but I'm not so much concerned about that right now. I'm more concerned about cost and service. $40/month as opposed to $6.95 for HostSave is a huge difference. How much web space does DSL give you, or does it at all? Do you still have to subscribe to a web provider on top of it? Is that just a connection or do you get all the other stuff? HostSave gives 30MB for $6.95 and a domain name. I was with a local provider called Teleport, but they sold out to OneMain, who in turn sold out to EarthLink and we feel we've been taken. I can't even access my e-mail from another computer (it's possible; I just can't figure out how to do it, whereas Teleport was easy to do that). Telelport was so good, too. They should have just stayed independent. Oh, well. Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. I just want to hang on to my website for now and I want to get away from EarthLink. Maybe one day, when I'm a bit more lucrative, I'll consider DSL. I was hoping someone might be able to tell me if they've had any good or bad experiences with HostSave. Anyone? Melanie
One thing about DSL is that yor connection is fast enough to run your own server. That's what I do. It's contractually non-commercial, so I can't sell stuff from my site, but I have other reasons why I can't do that anyway. Any version of Windows now includes (or can have added) a personal Web server. If it's not built in then it's a free download from MS. You need a firewall - software or hardware - to keep the hackers out when you're permanently connected, but your web space is up to 400GBytes if you fill your PC with hard drives.
I do need some commercial space besides my own personal stuff. I have a published novel I'm marketing, so part of my space needs to be for commercial purposes. As I said, I do have somewhat of a deficiency in Vitamin M (money). I need something inexpensive right now. The book isn't making me a fortune. Price is the keyword here. I just want to get away from EarthLink. Besides, a friend of mine has DSL and is constantly having problems with it. Oh, and by the way, Jamball, I don't have a second phone line. I have call messaging, so I just get voice mail when I'm on-line. It works fine for me right now. AAahhhhhh! EarthLink is driving me crazy! Melanie

I know this is off topic and I apologize right off, but none of the other forums in this site or the Commune has a generic forum that isn't either forum-specific, or 3D app-specific. Anyway, EarthLink is changing my service and I may be in the market for another provider. A while back, I saw a thread concerning other web providers that offer huge amounts of web space, but I can't seem to find it. Can anyone help me by giving me some ideas of web servers that I can look into to move my website to. EarthLink is only going to allow me 10 megs of space. This may be a problem, with all the graphics I post to my site. Any suggestions? Melanie
