As explained by you concerning the mesh now being one object with the lens being an integral part of the mesh, I am not sure about the transparency question, but to see what the mesh object's camera is seeing, just select camera from the little mesh/objects/camera triangle in the lower right corner of the work screen and then position the camera inside of the mesh pointing out thru the lens. Then go to the upper left area of the work screen and select "camera view". You will then see what the camera sees thru the object's lens and see what the camera mesh sees.
In essence, you are just positioning the camera into the object, pointing it in the desired direction and selecting "camera view" from the working view options in the work screen.
Hope that is not too confusing.

Also remember there is a free app called Pose Ray that is able to break up unimesh objects with defined material zones...check it out

Okay, got a weird one for you - I haven't REALLY played in Bryce for a handful of years, and I can't remember IF this can be done, much less HOW I would do it.
Check out the attached image - the lens that is gray? That should be mostly transparent. I have an Alpha Map that should give it partial transparency, and it is all one exported mesh with the lens housing - so I can't just do it as a separate object.
IF you can add another map (like you do a Bump - THAT part I loosely remembered and figured out), how would I add a transparency image/Alpha map image?
Thanks in advance whether it can work or not.
Also, can anyone tell me how I can get the viewport to see exactly what the camera is seeing - there's a whole LOT of bottom to this image that I never intended and I can't remember how to set the viewport correctly for the field of view.
