Subject: Using UV Mapper in Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard

shante ( ) posted Fri, 18 May 2012 at 4:30 PM · edited Sat, 01 February 2025 at 11:44 AM

Hi All Mac Poser users.

I have a need of a little help and nor sure if here is the best place to ask this or over in the Mac Forums.

Lynn has been giving her wonderful animals away as freebies of late. I would love to use the Wild Dogs/Wolf figures she distributed ult from the DAZ/P4 Wolf I believe.

The proble is she remapped them to work better for texturing and i need UV Mapper to create a new .obj file to use the figures.

I can't figure out how to do that since the only version of UVMapper lite distributed for free for Mac users no longer runs on my new Mac under SnowLeopard.

Anyone here give me some guidelinse as to how to do this i would appreciate it.

I am not the Poser Genius I would like to be so it has to b a REAL SIMPLE solution.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm not clear on what you are trying to achieve. what do you want to change about the obj file, and why?

shante needs to make a new obj Les so he/she can make a custom cr2 with the new mapping. Lyne probably supplied the .uvs file and you have to apply that to your own object file. Legal stuff and all that ;).

I wish I could help ya shante, but I have Windows machine and it's been a long time since I had a Mac - before OS X. I'm sorry.

Laurie

Both versions, the PPC from 2003 and the universal binary from 2006, work fine on my mac. I'm running OSX 10.6.8.

I do remember though, that I had trouble with the universal binary version a couple of years ago. I don't remember what the problem was, but using the PPC version instead solved it.

Hi!

Thanks for responding. That is the same version of the OS I am running.

So the PPC version is made for the Intel Macs...right? It must be if it is going to run in SnowLeopard.

So where do I get the app?

Someone told me they didin't make a version that ran native in this OS Environment and that I had to get something similar to Rosetta to adapt it and run on my Mac.

Hi Les!

Thanks for stopping by.

What Laurie said is what is happening. The artist remapped the Wolf to make a better texture for the set so I need to UVMap so I can use it because the .obj file belongs to DAZ.

Did you try to adress your question in the UVMapper Forum? UVDan is the mod there.

Both versions can be downloaded here:

http://www.uvmapper.com/downloads.html

Sorry, I don't know how to make it a clickable link.

And the PPC version will work if you install Rosetta. More info about it here:

I find I can use some poser utilities for PC on mac without the need for running windows which I don't use and don't own. I either use winebottler which is freeware or I use crossover which i payed for.  Neither of them involve windows or expose your computer to windows viruses.

Wtih winebottler I made a nice stand alone version of morphing clothes which works just like a mac application. I just click on it and it opens and I use it.  I haven't tried this with UV mapper but you never know, it might work. I haven't tried it because I don't need UV mapper.

Love esther

Let's start at the beginning.

What version of OSX are you running?  OSX 10.7 no longer supports Rosetta (the part that makes PPC versions run).

UVX Mapper is a PPC application & will not run under 10.7 (Lion) or later.

Give me a few minutes & I'll see if I can get the windows version to run under WINE.

<2 minutes later>

It runs under WINE no problem.

OK from the beginning.

I am running SnowLeopard OS 10.6.8

I got WineBottler sometime ago just never installed it being reluctant to install stuff that I might not know how to use (I assure you all I have tried a lot of stuff that that has happened to).You say it runs under WINE...what OS Version are you running?

As much as I hate to admit it, I am NOT the sharpest nail in the bag when it comes to this stuff. Despite having been using Poser since version 4 (now in 7) I am not sure how I've managed to even decent images created all this time since there is so much in the app and other utilities I have never been able to wrap my rigid brain matter around (magnets, deformers, dynamic hair, dynamic cloth, the advanced Materials settings room, joint parms, etc).

Last time I used UVMappper Light Free for Mac I got a headache trying to figure out what to do. So not too thrilled about this from the get go but I really want to use these animal figures so I am going to try.

I am still on 10.6.8 myself.

If you are running 1.6.8, do you have rosetta installed.  It became an optional install in 10.6, so you may not have installed it.  I was able to run the windows version under wine 1.2.3.

You can get the latest & greatest wine version (1.3.13) from here:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/darwine/

To run Wine, you need to have either X11 (which comes with OSX, but is no longer updated by Apple - no loss there, they were ALWAYS late in updating it.) or Xquartz, which is what is actually updated on a regular basis.  You can get it (Ver 2.7.1) here:

http://xquartz.macosforge.org/landing/

1.  install xquartz.

2.  install wine

3.  unzip UVMapper for Windows.

4.  right-click the unzipped exe

5.  click on OPEN WITH

6.  select wine

  1. Profit!

and then if you use winebottler you should be able to turn it into a stand alone application that looks like a mac application and acts like one
