Subject: So will MY computer work for Poser 2012?

Lyne ( ) posted Tue, 22 May 2012 at 2:03 PM · edited Mon, 17 February 2025 at 12:45 AM

Hi! calling all tech geeks!!

Will MY computer system handle PoserPro 2012?  I would have to install the 32 bit...but I keep reading just a tiny line in Requirements "you need 64 bit IF you install the 64 bit version" and it seems to HAVE a 32 bit version??? (and yes I had my son do the 32 bit version of win7 for hardware and software backward compatibility...I just can not afford to buy all new versions of stuff!)

My system:

Win7 32 bit - Ultimate Edition with Service pack 1
and IE 8

Video card: ati radeon HD 5850. W/1 gig GDDR5 ram
Processor: intel I-7 875. 7 core processor (unlocked). (that means that it over clocks itself)
Ram : 4 gigs DDR3 1600 MgH ( real fast )
Power : 850 watt modular power supply
Hard drive : western dig 1 tarabyte (sata 6.0)
Motherboard: azus atx m/b 12 USB ports 8 USB 2.0 - 4 USB 3.0 -

I am going to ask my son to turn OFF the "over clocking" - I think it actually slows it down. He is a gamer, I am not. Second Life is not really like a fast paced gaming world.

Anyway... I keep being "pulled" to 2012, via all the incredible art...

Thanks!

Lyne

I was under the impression that Win 7 was all 64bit with the ability to run in 32bit if required due to hardware restrictions.  The Intel i-7 should also be 64 bit - someone correct me if I am wrong.

I have Win 7 Ultimate and Poser Pro 2012.  You can choose to install the 32bit version if required and it should work fine.  Of course in 32bit it will not use the full 4G Ram which would be one of the big advantages of 64bit.

I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 -  Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB  storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU .   The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.

I'll correct myself - I should have looked first so there is a win 7 32bit, you learn something new every day.  PoserPro 2012 should still work with no problems except it may be slow or have memory errors on large scenes/renders.

Do a search here on memory as there is some good info on how to best set Windows up  for memory usage.

Yep, the 32 bit version will run fine, but of course will be limited to the 32 bit os archetechture limitations.

I wouldn't worry about turning off the overclocking. ATI has that built into their video card drivers, and it might speed up your scene preview some.

Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.

Your computer will work fine. Win7 Ultimate 32-bit will run Poser2012 without any problems. One great feature of the FireFly Rendering Engine is that you can Queue your renderings. They run in the background and the final render is written to a file. In other words you can continue working in Poser on a scene while your rendering works separately. Experiment a little and you'll see that Queue rendering is a great choice.

Win 7 does come in both flavors.  However, under 64-bits you can run either 32- or 64-bits if the software allows; otherwise, it will default to comparative versions.  For PP2012, both options are available.

do not turn off overclocking. Many Poser processes are "single threaded" which means they use one processor only, the faster it runs the better.

You can tweak the Windows system to give Poser more memory, for larger scenes. See my Missing Manuals website for some tutorials, tips and tricks on this.

Usually I'm wrong. But to be effective and efficient, I don't need to be correct or accurate.

visit www.aRtBeeWeb.nl (works) or Missing Manuals (tutorials & reviews) - both need an update though

You will have no problems at all. It runs OK on a Core Duo 2.0 GHZ laptop with 2.5GB RAM and a Mobility Radeon X-1300 (IIRC) with XP-32  SP3...

Yeah, Poser Pro 2012 runs fine on my crappy little dual core with 3 gigs of ram ;).

That was the information I was thinking of, I remeber reading it and thinking how useful it was but really couldn't remeber the thread I read it in.  I think it has something to do with my increasing age.

I had heard that there were compatibility issues with old software in the 64 bit version of Win 7. Here in Canada, I was told it was not possible to buy a 32 bit version, however, since no one sold it.  That was shortly after it was first released.

I bought a new machine with 64 bit version and never once had any compatibility issues at all, and some of my favorite software is old enough for me to have had backup versions on floppy disk.

I am glad I couldn't buy the 32 bit version.

Unlocked doesn't mean that it is overclocked, it means it can be overclocked.  There is a difference between overclocking and Intel's Turbo Boost feature.  The Turbo Boost can kick the speed of the chip up when only one or two cores are being used.  Whether you have Windows 7 32bit or 64bit you cannot run older 16bit programs.  I had a few older 32bit programs that I couldn't install because the installers were 16bit.

Ah! and now another IMPORTANT question... when I buy (and it's only a matter of time now, as I can't resist what I see people doing with Pro2012) is: DO I GET BOTH the 32 bit and the 64 bit versions ? Should I buy the "hard copy" CDs to get both... because from what I have learned, I will end up upgrading my machine (some day) to a 64 bit!! I hate to spend the upgrade $250 for "just" the 32 bit version... !

Thanks again!! You all are super helpful!!

My version had both and the option to install the 32bit version if I wanted to.  I doubt anything has changed so you only need to buy it once, run 32 bit for now and just install 64bit when you have the opion.

Not sure where you are located but when Poser 9/2012 was first released some people buying the 'hard copy' told of massive shipping and import costs.

Just curious, is there any particular reason you want Poser Pro? If not, why not go Poser 9, since you have a 32 bit version of windows you may as well pick that one. It certainly is less money and if you don't use any of the pro features, there is not need to get pro.

I was able to buy an upgrade to Poser Pro2012 for $125 in March.

I upgraded from P6, 7. The Program runs much faster than Poser7.
