Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Dec 22 10:18 pm)
Yep, definitely Posette, although you could argue that wasn't a Smith Micro figure. It belonged to whoever owned Poser at the time and was I believe created by Zygote, who then hived off that bit of the company to become DAZ.
Further to that, the Victoria 1 (and 2) mesh was derived from it and V3 was derived from V 1 and 2.
Coppula eam se non posit acceptera jocularum.
Quote - The most popular non-Zygote/DAZ Smith Micro figure would be Miki 2 or 3. James would probably be the most popular male in the same category.
I have a feeling Miki 1020 was more popular than 2. By the time everyone had Miki (and a lot of ppl jump on her) and saw the horrible joints, they were disollusioned by the time Miki 2 came along. I bought Miki 1020 the first week she was out. I didn't buy Miki 2 until just this year...lol. Miki 1 still has the sweetest face the best expressions of any figure I've seen yet.

I wonder what Teyon could do with Dork and Posette.... > Hint - Hint
But they would have to be welded first.
Morphed by Teyon and then weightmapped.
Dork and Posette still have some of the very best Poly distribution of all figures around.

I think it is probably the Ground Plane, with the single-sided square being a close second, although technically they are props, not figures...

I'd like Smith Micro to include the weight mapped versions of all of the figures that come with Poser. I guess they think we all need brand new figures, but incorporating the improvements into the older figures would give us more variety. Maybe there should be a place dedicated solely to weight maps, re-maps, etc. of older figures? I know the stuff is out there, but it's really scattered and I have no idea who all of the people are who have polished up the older figures in one way or another. Would be nice to have the ultimate versions of every figure, including every major improvement that has been made to them...
Unfortunatelly Smith Micro wouldn't spend time for old figures, people always look for the new. All the default poser people in my opinion had great potential but after release it is only the community that will take advantage of those potentials.
However the success of Poser people relies on their default look, if it is neutral or attractive enough they have a bit more chances to be used (James is an example) or else people will never notice them and all the content that comes with them.
I don't even mention community support, this is minimal for default poser people, the last one with community support was AnAn who was based on P5 Woman - Judy
It's arguable that Posette had enormous community support and still does at Posette Forever. You're right to say it's minimal now but that's most likely down to the success of the DAZ figures.
Not wishing to revive the topic but that could well change now DAZ have pretty much pulled away from Poser humans. I live in hope. Actually, I live in Wath upon Dearne; Hope is about 25 miles west of here and a very nice place it is, too. :)

That's a pretty safe assumption. Thing is, they do include the older figures with the newer releases, so my question was more whether they could distribute the community revamped figures (as I think they should if they could)... Posette with weightmapping, and an alternate remapped version (to use another more common figure's maps), and maybe a nice SSS shader set-up could practically be considered a new figure. If they did that with every figure they currently ship with Poser, I thnk that might be a minor selling point for many people. (Now I'm noticing that Poser9 may not in fact come with Don and Judy...)

Another reason they should spend a weekend each updating the older figures. As Daz have shown, you can stretch a sufficiently dense mesh into almost anything. Unless they are prohibited from further modifying that content, I'd think it would be easy for them to polish up each figure for every new Poser release.

Again that goes back to most of them either having a critical flaw, having many small flaws, or just being so ugly that no one bothered using them. I'm not suggesting they do some elaborate beautification to all of their figures, just reasonably update them to use the new features as they are introduced. If someone weightmaps "the Dork", adds JCMs, a skin shader...
It would be really cool if the figures could be hosted like software distros. Then we would have versioning (weightmapping, JCMS) and forks (re-maps, head swaps) and a person could see any changes or fixes made to a figure and always be able to easily find the most up to date package for each. I think Smith Micro would be in the best position position to host and distribute that content of anyone.
It would take more than a weekend for each figure. More like a week for each one at least, with a couple people working on it. Multiply that by how many figures there are that need updating and correcting, and you've got quite an expensive project, just for the hopes of community to support these revamped figures that may or may not carry much interest.
There are people who have made corrections to several figures, but due to eulas, etc, they can't be redistributed, so it winds up being a waste of time unless you're doing it strictly for personal use.

moogalit is not that I don't find this idea brilliant, but judging from previous releases the poser owners never makes any changes to older content, they just include it as legacy
With only exception the PP12 figures that are the P8 people weight mapped
As for the process of the revamp, I agree with Shane, having completelly rework Posette for the past 8 years i can say that it is a very time consuming procedure. And since time is money I guess it is much quicker for them to create from scratch a new poser family in every new version of Poser.
Including the community reworks is also a great idea, I would love to see my Nea on the default runtime, without the needing of decoding
Well, there is a problem..
All older Poser figures have flaws. From not being welded, to rigging that was made with the tools available at that time.
But all add-ons, all morphs packs, all clothing, and so on where build for these figures WITH their flaws.
Updating the original figures, welding them correctly and rigging them correctly would pose problems for all these support items.
But I agree; Updating them would make them more usable, more user friendly for all new Poser users.
Hell, even the original Poser 1 figures are still included in the shipped content.
My 2 cents would be: Repair them, or remove them.

My thinking as well. I never meant to imply that I thought each figure could be completely fixed/updated in a weekend, just that even a weekend of work on a figure would improve it greatly. Especially if done by those who best know how things work, say people directly involved with the program's release...
I think the issue of how supported these individual figures are is beside the point, because they are included content. Just as I think the program should be fixed/improved with regard to users' concerns, I think the content should occasionally be fixed/improved as well.
It seems we pick and choose figures to use based on versatility, because you have to assume it takes a bit of time familiarizing yourself with the figure and then some more time (or money) outfitting the figure and creating our unique characters. Poser figures, like Don for example, might never be the star of the show, but it's good to have variety when populating scenes and the older lower-poly figures are especially suited to background use. (But there's such a startling gap between the default appearance ofa P4 character and a more recent one that both will look less believable in the company of the other...)
I guess it's a mindset thing... Maybe they look at each new figure as addressing the problems with previous ones. New figures come out, old figures get frozen in time. I just see how those figures could each actually have a purpose... James has a nice athletic build, good for soldiers and action men, but he was never a replacement for the Dork when needing an average man in a mundane setting. Similarly, some females are better suited to being glamorous or sexy while others work better as average or cute characters.

No this isn't a question about any of the DAZ figures popularity, but I was just wondering of all the figures ever released with Poser by Smith Micro, or MetaCreations, or E-frontier, or Creative Labs, which one(s) would you say have been the most popular for people to use?
