Subject: Nela - new free female figure by Pinin at ShareCG

NanetteTredoux ( ) posted Mon, 11 June 2012 at 1:01 PM · edited Thu, 06 February 2025 at 12:34 AM

I downloaded her - she has a slightly fae/elvish look about her, even with human ears. Few face morphs - perhaps there will be more? She has nice elf ear morphs.  Pregnant morph and genital morphs for those who are interested in such things. Pinin also uploaded some some free underwear and hair for her.

Someone on ShareCG said she looks masculine but I don't think so. Certainly not with that body. She has a distinct look which I find quite attractive, and I'll use her and make some dynamic clothes for her. I am hoping for more morphs, otherwise I'll try my hand at making some.

(edit) Oh my goodness - she has a morph for a third breast!

Correct, I pointed out to the creator that the usage rights would limit acceptance of the figure. Still, she is very nice and I would be happy to give her some non-commercial support.

The third breast just cracks me up - but I suppose it is interesting for some fantasy artists.

Strangely I find myself singing a song from the Mikado :)

Yes that is very obscure but some may get it :)

Got it. LOL.

The 3 breasted morph should be called the Mary Morph!!! See who gets that one!!! LOL.

All the best.

Natalia/Natrixa has a third breast morph, too.

Thanks for the heads up on the figure.

Anyhow, that's nothing.  Some of the big fat biffers round here wear bras that are too small and it makes 'em look like they have 4 tits.  :)

Next time give a warning please..

That "thing" is so heavy my desk broke in half.

And, not only that but:
Sorry, can not even start to try to call it a woman.
More something like a leaden fancy balloon holder.
She went as fast out as she came in.

brrr, gives me the shivvers.

Pitty pitty Poser . . . will take days to recover from that.

That is subdeviding with the sole purpose to subdevide and then subdevide again for the fun of it.

Gonna wash my HD now., perhaps it will forgive me for downloading.

Sorry, but Vilters is right.

Apart from the anatomical problems (The arms are way to short), the mesh topology is a complete convoluted mess.

She is 210.000 polygons, which are about 190.000 too many.

It's a shame because the general sculpting, the mapping and the rigging isn't too bad.

Nethertheless, three boobs or not, such a high polycount is an absolute NO GO for me, so I, too, had to delete her.

NanetteTredoux ( ) posted Mon, 11 June 2012 at 11:39 PM

Polygon purists, we hear you once more. If Vilters and JoePublic won't use a figure it will have zero impact on the galleries or the freestuff section, but evidently not on the forums. To each his own. I welcome all efforts to bring Poser new figures, especially if the creator is generous enough to give it away free. Even if the free version is just a base version. Aesthetically I like this figure, and my system handles her just fine. If we encourage and support new content creators, they may receive some constructive feedback and eventually develop content that is more efficient. It is a free item. You didn't spend any money on her, and nobody is forcing you to use her.

Would you want to live in a house that wasn't build up to code as long as it's free ?

Would you let anyone repair the brakes of your car as long as he does it for free ?

Building a house is a craft.

Maintaining a car is a craft.

And guess what, mesh modelling is a craft, too.

And as with every craft, there are do's and dont's.

Funny anatomy and bad topology aren't a stylistic choice.

They are typical beginners mistakes.

Yes, it's a freebie, but sorry, the moment you put it out there for everyone to download, you open yourself up for public scrutiny.

At least Vilters tried to take the edge of his critc off by being over the top facetious and I even made a funny pic and telling excactly where the problems are instead of just saying: "You suck, your work sucks, please never touch a modelling program again." (<-- NOTE: This was meant sarcastic !)

Actually, I don't want to discuss freebies anyway, as there are enough bad commercial meshes out there deserving my purist attention.

I just didn't want to let the all too predictable kneejerk "How dare you say sumfink bad about a freebie. We all should be grateful for...etc, etc, etc" attack stand unanswered.

There are tons of (free) modelling tutorials out there.

There are tons of (free) human references out there.

At a certain point, especially if you try to create something as complicated as a human figure, you better make use of all that knowledge people are giving away freely.

I don't know enough about topology to criticise anyone's work. I can see that she bends well. I like the look of the legs and torso and the breasts don't matter so much because I'll clothe her. I like her arms - I can easily scale them to be longer, but at least they have a nice soft look to them. To my non-expert eye, the rigging seems good - she does the contortionist poses well. So I can knock out a dress or two in Marvelous Designer, a pair of shoes perhaps and some more hair. No problem, those will be free and no violation of terms. And I'll use her as an extra in a render or two. To get centre stage in a render or in my story, she needs more face morphs, at least for expressions. I will not consider making those unless the creator decides to allow commercial renders. I don't know if he will. I gather he was intending to sell content for her and not allow commercial renders, which limits anyone's ability to promote commercial content. After all that has been said about her here, I believe her commercial viability is severely compromised.

I'm with JoePublic on expectations for figures meant to compete with Daz's and "save" Poser. But if a guy wants to make a three breasted woman and share it with the public on ShareCG, I don't think we need to harp on him about his polygon count. I get the feeling his figure was made with a completely different purpose.  Maybe his next one will be lower poly, maybe it won't.  As far as I can tell he's just a hobbyist trying his hand at figure creation, no need to bash him for his efforts, it's not like he's claiming he has a Vicky Killer on his hands.

Again, I really didn't want to "bash" a freebie.

And as I said, I generally liked the sculpting and rigging.

Heck, I even exported her to Wings3D to see if I could delete some of the subdivision, but the topology was just too convoluted.

(I manged to get MIKI 1 down from 130.000 polygons to 30.000 without any noticeable difference when rendered)

It's not agression or ill-will, it's much more desperation I posted.

I downloaded tons of freebies and many had great details, but the overall shape was so off I couldn't stand using them as is and the mesh was so dense those problems were impossible to fix.

It's heartbraking seeing so many hours of modelling wasted just because of some basic rules ignored:

  1. ALWAYS use a reference so you get the shapes right.

  2. NEVER EVER subdivide unless you really, really need all those new polygons.

I'm not a professional modeller. The pro's can whip out a mesh in a couple of hours that takes me months to finish.

But I work methodically.

And sticking to some basic rules actually saves me time and gives me more satisfaction with the finished work.

Ok, here's my two cents on the mesh:-

The actual skin topology is 106358 polygons. Most of the poly distribution isn’t bad, but the hands are heavy, weighing in at around 41,000, (not counting the fingernails). The fingernails, toenails, eyes, polygonal eyelashes and inner mouth are a whooping 93,975. This is tragic.

I think the default shape for the mesh is an odd choice. It doesn’t take much work to make it something more realistic.

All I Know is that taking a look at her led me to discover that RedViper has some new outfits available! I don't especially care for Nela at first glance but each figure has its pros and cons. Unless it is absolutely unusable, I'm not going to carp too much about polygon counts or other such. Either it appeals to you or it doesn't. I'm sure I'd be more critical in an area that I know more about but even then, if it works and I can get some use from it - and I don't want to create my own - then it's good.

She does appeal to me, but apparently the creator will not revise his position about not allowing commercial renders. In that case it won't be worth my while making stuff for her. A great pity.
