Subject: Correct settings for DS4 to obj to blender and back?

Oom ( ) posted Sun, 10 June 2012 at 2:29 PM · edited Thu, 07 November 2024 at 2:46 PM

I would like to do some morphs for a character that is in cr2 format.
From what I understand Poser Tool 2 is not there yet and millighost excellent script only work on dsf.
I have made a test or two but it will not work so I suspect some box is ticked that should not be and/or one that should be ticked isn't.

Dose anyone know the correct settings?

Cheers! Oom

Hi Oom,

I did that since Blender 2.4x.  Thanks ideasman42 to make this happen.  See http://blenderartists.org/forum/archive/index.php/t-87473.html for details.

The button "Morph Target" now take a generic name "keep vertex order"

Use the File -> Import -> Wavefront (.obj) with the settings shown in the picture to import your mesh.

I forgot the most important part, only import the body part you want to morph and make sure that you do not scale or change the origin of the imported mesh when you make your own morph.

To export, select the obj, then use the File -> Export -> Wavefront (.obj) with the settings shown in the picture to export your morphed mesh.

Hi Oom,

I just realized that you have read the "Making a face morph for genesis"  The import/export technique there works with DAZ Studio 4 only.  It will not work for Poser because dsf is a DAZ Studio file format.

Using OBJ import/export is the known working option for Poser<->Blender.

Thank you for your answer amy_aimei!
I have tried the settings, but no luck so far I am afraid. What settings should I have in DS4 when I export the obj?

Cheers! Oom

I have managed to make a morph for a primitive plane :)

The morph also rotated the plane so somthing is still wrong.

I am working on it

Be sure to check Poly Groups in Blender, both on import and export.  Don't export from DS, import the obj file directly from the Geometries Folder.

This is the settings I used.

Steps to export body part:

  1. Hide everything in the scene of DAZ Studio.

  2. Select the body part to be morphed and make it visible.

  3. Export to OBJ format using default setting for Poser.

jestmart ( ) posted Wed, 13 June 2012 at 12:58 PM

If you check the poly groups option on both import and export you can (and IMO should) work on the whole body instead of individual parts.  Even if you only want to change one area of the figure working on the whole figure will create a smoother transition from one area to the next.

Thank you amy_aimei and jestmart!

I just made a quick test on Kururur and it worked perfectly, almost. My morph still rotates and mirrors the entire figure but I think I can sort that out, I used the Blender preset in DS not the Poser.

The morph is there and the dail is working and I am happy.

Cheers! Oom

jestmart ( ) posted Thu, 14 June 2012 at 12:50 PM

I think using the Blender preset is the reason the morph is being rotated.  If you export the figure from Studio use Custom 100% scale for both exporting and importing.  If importing into blender from the Geometries folder you will need to import in Studio using Poser scale.  You should not need to scale on import or export in Blender.

I had the "Swap Y and Z Orientation" box checked in Morph Loader. Now everything works fine.
Thanks again! Oom

"Proof of concept" Arien has released the Mortella Dynamic Dress as a freebie. http://www.arien-graphics.com/wp/?p=852 It will only fit the Mortella character. I manage to make a morph to make it fit the default Genesis and with a simple rig transfer it now follows Genesis shapes fairly well. (The gown deserves a better shader btw.) Oom

Hi Oom,

It sounds like you have found the best way to export/import mesh to/from DAZ Studio and Blender.  Could you share it?  The method I used is old, I would like to try some new methods.

Hello amy_aimei

I did exactly like you and jestmart told me, well almost ;)
Instead of exporting a single part of the mesh you export the whole character. No other change in exporting from DS.
(I prefer the the blender scale so I change the scale in the Poser export setting to 2%).
When importing to blender use your old settings but also check the Poly Gropes box.
When you export from blender, use your old settings only also check the Poly Gropes box.
When I import the morph to DS I prefer to use Morph Loader. The free DS4pro comes with both  Morph Loader Advanced and  Morph Loader pro. Just make certain that the "Swap Y and Z Orientation box" is NOT checked. With the Poser preset it is not checked. With the Morph Loader you can load several morps at once and it gives you better control over the dials.

I hope this will help you, you helped me a lot. :)
