So, the old saying goes "You learn something new every day."

Today I learned how to ventilate hairpieces and am working on my very first fake moustache, haha!

What interesting stuff did y'all learn today (or recently)? Inquiring minds want to know!

I learned that not all props and characters come in at "zero" like they say they do on the dials.  Some of them are waaaaay off in another direction.

rokket ( ) posted Tue, 17 July 2012 at 9:56 PM

I learned that the bartender I am lusting over likes me too. Just not "like that"... sigh

If I had a nickle for ever time a woman told me to get lost, I could buy Manhattan.

Would owning a fake handlebar moustache cheer you up, rokket?

Is this a "real" fake handlebar moustache you're referring to Hana??

😉

...today I learnt that at least a couple of users are not the "gender" I'd envisaged they were previously... I guess this harks back to SamTherapy's previous OT thread about preconceptions.

Its amazing how our brains still insist on constructing these precepts... even though intellectually we know we have no basis for them...

...well, my brain does this anyway. I guess I'm creating another preconception for myself, speculating that anyone else's brain does this. Maybe it is just me?? LOL

Now, for the rest of the day, I'm learning about Clonezilla.

It's far from as exciting as it sounds unfortunately...

Conjugating Spanish verbs while holding a very slow traffic open house. Only the simple tenses so far, all 7., i.e., their names en espanol too (presente de indicativo, imperfecto de indicativo, preterit (my favorite), futuro, etc.). Still getting KILLED by the irregular verbs, though.

Actually that was YESterday.  Don't know about today yet.

Teyon ( ) posted Wed, 18 July 2012 at 7:05 AM

That it's a lot more fun making facial morphs for cartoon characters than it is for "realistic" humans.

3doutlaw ( ) posted Wed, 18 July 2012 at 8:23 AM

Yesterday I learned to use "not" versus "==0" in Python, to always check that V4 eyes will close periodically during a scene, and to get food at the nice concessions at the front of the stadium, versus waiting to get it at the ones way up at the cheap seats.  :)

Blackhearted ( ) posted Wed, 18 July 2012 at 10:02 AM

i learned to heed the warnings on Illy espresso coffee to 'open slowly, STOP, wait to release pressure'.

I learned I'm too old to ride around in a car without AC in the US deep south in summer.

Glitter- Learned that one some time ago. It's really tough, isn't it? 102 in Kentucky yesterday.

I learned if you wait long enough sometimes a thread will moderate itself. I REALLY like that! (Not refering to THIS thread, BTW)

I learned my 3 1/2 year-old granddaughter has figured out that PawPaw is the one you ask when you want a trip to the toystore. And yes, she remembers in the afternoon what you promised in the morning! Should have seen that one coming.

Well I had success with it, cloning NTFS formatted drives with fully configured and then sysprep'd instances of Win7 on them... worked a treat... which is more than I can say for MS' own WDS...

Actually...it is! Heh. I didn't think it would really cheer anyone up, but in the case that it would, I would be willing to part with it when it's done. Hand-tied human hair on fine theater lace, which I'm inordinately proud of, even though I'm only halfway done...See attached image, hehe.

I know for a fact that I do it, too. That's why I tend to avoid using pronouns unless I know for sure, hehe. Some people get offended when you've decided their sex for them...

Oh, Larry, Larry...you poor thing. I hated irregular verbs in French, and the extent of my spanish is "Two cold beers please," "Where's the bathroom," "I don't speak spanish," and "The cat is on fire."

Basicwiz, hehe. They learn fast, don't they. My little one has recently learned that Gammy is the one to ask for money, 'cause Gammy doesn't make her earn it like I do...

Ima70, I'm sending courageous and warm-fuzzy thoughts your way!

Yeah, this weather is awful.  I'm house hunting and got the brilliant idea to drive around looking for empty houses.  Dumb, dumb, dumb.  We're actually in the low 90s this week in Georgia, but it's still way too hot for that idea!

I have an uncle in western KY and he refuses to come to Georgia during the summer because of the heat.  He must be melting right now!

I learned that the Knicks did one of the stupidest things ever and let Jermey Lin go for nothing.

I also learned a game I wanted is on sale over at that popular digital distribution site so I bought it.

Finally I learned that at comic con WB has a trailer of the new Godzilla.  It looks more like the original, he'll be fighting a six-armed monster, and will have a grittier (batman reboot) feel to it.  I am hyped.

Learnt how projectors don't just have to be horizontal, but can point upwards. So you can make things fly across a ceiling, which helped me get a new contract/job that I've been after for ages. Not just about the money, but more importantly will allow me to artistically and technically explore new ideas.

Today I learned the new batman movie is good, but not as good as the last two... it's kind of like you can't really top Empire or Khan.  They say the sequels sink because its hard to follow up the original, for Sci Fi it seems, the sequels are better than the first and set up an impossible scenerio for the 3rd movie to top.

The third one seems to have more visible flaws and story holes, particularly in the first half.  One of the new characters they introduce seems to get a little too much screen time.  This movie was also said by some not to be able to be followed up.  While I see an intrepretation that would allow for that to happen, I can also see this as a "definitive" ending point.  I don't think DC should try to milk this because Batman is their only superhero they can get right.

And it was cool to see Kane back again for a little bit.  Good for continuity with the other two films... its a shame they didn't work the joker back into it.

WARK!
