Subject: "Sponsored Items" pertinence (and suggestion)

I'm not a big fan of the wasted real estate, but I could probably be convinced of its usefulness if it didn't always show me products I have already bought (at least one, sometimes all three). I actually already know those products exist, so it's a waste of time and money...

I admit it would be some work, but it would make sense to tune your system to serve personalized "sponsorized items" to registered users. Just replace, for that person, mentions of stuff already owned by something else.

Yes, I know parsing the client databases each time the website serves that page would probably be too much of a strain (considering the time it takes to call up my purchased items list), but then again I think those "sponsored items" are but a small subset of the store and pretty recent items, so just make a new table telling each "sponsored item" for whom it should not show (ie, who has already bought it), that should be a manageable amount of data.

Vendors pay for those slots, choosing the items they want to promote (hence the "sponsoring"). The ads aren't pulled randomly from the system ;-)  There are also I think 12 ads, not just 3, they rotate.

Yes, but wasting slots to display items a client already has defeats the purpose, doesn't it. Right now vendors pay to show me stuff I have already bought (and won't buy again)!

That's why I suggested a personalized system, showing to each customer items (s)he doesn't own yet, obviously chosen from the "sponsorized" pool.

As for the 3 items, that's the amount displayed. I know there are more in the pool, and yes, I noticed the pool is smallish. That's why I think it wouldn't be too difficult to improve it so it makes some sense for everybody.

I agree.

If I try to put something in my cart that I have already purchaced,  Rendo's system recognizes that I already own it and stops me from buying it a second time.  How hard would it be to apply that to the rotating sponsored items feature?  After all,  the vendors are waisting their sponsor money showing me things that I already own,  and it would make sense to only have things the logged on user doesn't already own show up there.
