A suggestion regarding your side note. Blender is an excellent program for modeling in and a big plus is that it is free.
There are a huge number of excellent tutorials to get you started with and there is a very active and helpful community at,

Blender is about the best free modeling (and everything else) program you can find, BUT, if you can't wrap your noggin around it's complex, albeit better than it's older UI, Wings 3D might be more your speed to get started on modeling.

RajDarge had a set of armor for V4 at sharecg.

It may not be as armorish as you want but it is not bad. The chainmail texture might need some fixing in the material room to use the correct image files provided.

Hello to the vendors of Renderosity, and much respect to you all! I am hoping that more of you out there will take on the challenge of creating protective fantasy armor and adventure gear for female characters that is practical enough to... well... protect the female character. There are high quality armor sets out there to be sure, but I do think there is great opportunity to create chainmail shirts that are more than just metal bras, for example, or variations on plate armor that doesn't leave all vital organs exposed.
As a side note, any ideas on good software to begin the process of creating my own models would be appreciated as well!
Thanks all.
