THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Easter Egg_How can I set ONE object in a Bryce scene NOT to "AA"?

Lyne ( ) posted Tue, 06 November 2012 at 6:27 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 12:48 PM

I am getting back to my "Bryce roots".... grin... and I have a question:

I used a trick eons ago, to NOT AA just one or two objects in my scene... made the mountains for example look better... but I can't find how to set that anymore... as I work with Bryce 7 Pro, I am slowly remembering a lot... I got my wolf (poser wolf with my morphs and new map) exported from Poser 7 as an obj (default settings, I did X choose the BODY for it, and unXd the ground) to a folder I made for it, IN Bryce...and I put a copy of my texture map in that same folder...and I was able to import it easy as pie, into my scene! Yay! (no need for DS)...

I also was able to put a sky photo on a plane, and set it up fine... also able to paste in my older Bryce - object saved Xfrog trees that I had set up long ago... so making progress! :)

Just that I had this TRICK of not AAing one thing.. and I can't find the setting in the object's properties dealies - (happens to be my wolf I do not want to AA, so the coat will look as it should)... those teeny tiny minuscule menu squares next to the "highlighted" wolf object...

So if anyone has that knowledge, thanks! :)

Found this on the net. Can't say for sure it works.

To turn off AA for a single object or group:

  1. Select the object or group.

  2. Click the A button next to the object/group. The Object Attributes dialog will come up. 22 July 2008AZ 3D,

  3. Press Ctrl+Shift+Alt and click on the OK icon in the Object Attributes dialog.

  4. Render the scene. The object with the AA turned off will have rougher edges than other objects.

tjohn!!! that kind of undocumented easter egg is the type thing we need to put in the Bryce Backroom if the admins ever get it back on line.

Lyne ( ) posted Tue, 06 November 2012 at 9:50 PM

Well it would be great .... if it worked!  :(   It's broken, plus I "broke" my keyboard trying it... sheesh! Leave it to me... I kept pressing those keys while in Bryce... because I kept waiting for the extra menu thingy to come up (that I do remember happening now) and it would not... but once I gave up, I logged in here, to post about it...and my keyboard went wonky!! - meaning I freaked out when my backspace went forward and my enter or space bar went (with letters on the screen) backwards! I called my tech son, and he said unplug your keyboard, power down, plug it in, restart... and all is well... WHEW! My machine is MY LIFE and it was SCARY!  We can only think it activated some stupid hot key sequence... but I will NEVER try that again!

I am very happy (and as you can see) typing fine...but because of my dyslexia, I have to have a "split space bar" keyboard - half the space bar is a backspace! I actually type many words 3 times over to get it to be legible... can't even buy this keyboard anymore...

and by the way, I am so NOT mad at anyone, or Bryce... but it's sad that this nifty function does not work.... oh and FYI for you helpful geeks, I am running a 32 bit Win7 Ultimate Edition with Service pack 1, with Bryce 7 Pro....

I could not find how to enable or disable hot keys...but something was going on in "here".  I do wonder if DAZ programers that 'upgraded' Bryce left that easter egg out?

We will probably never know... I used it extensivly when I was a Brycer... (I was born into the 3D world, via the first Bryce for PC... "2" I think it was!) and life was happily never the same! :)

Best wishes,

Lyne

Sorry it didn't work, Lyne. Daz did probably make changes that defeated the easter egg. Glad your keyboard wasn't permanently borked.

Just tested this in 5.5, 6.3, 7.1 and it still works in each of them for me. I seem to remember playing with this feature back in bryce 4.

Tjohn, Your post is appearing in black text on a the dark background so it was hard for me to read. anyway you don,t use the Alt key, just hold down > shift+ctrl together as you exit the object attributes using the "tick".

Cheers

Good One...I'm going to stick and retitle this post with an added Easter Egg in the title

Once in a while I look around,
I see a sound
and try to write it down
Sometimes they come out very soft
Tinkling light sound
The Sun comes up again

Since this is a stickey, if you want to turn AA back on repeat Kiwi's process above.

Thanks for the correction, GG! That was a copy/paste from another site, which accounts for the text color, and erroneous info. I'm going to delete my original post if I can so as not to confuse anyone.

John

Edit: Too late, can't delete. Could a Mod help me out and flush it for me? Thanks.

Oh!!!  JUST "SHIFT & CONTROL".... so I should not get my keyboard in trouble again? hmmm well I think I will be BRAVE and try it out...at least I KNOW how to "fix" my keyboard just in case I have some odd hot key reaction!

Now that I think of it, it does feel more right for just the two keys.... Wow, I'm pleased that my poking at my old friend Bryce resulted in something helpful to the community! :)  I mostly would "not AA" on far away mountains that had some sort of vegetation on them... our real world is not that AA'd!  LOL!

runs off to test this

EDIT: what on earth am I doing wrong? I held down shift and control, while Atributes was open and while I was clicking the check mark... but my wolf AAd anyway. There is no separate menu, right? Or is the WAY you hold the keys? like one, then the other? I am sorry I seem to be so dense with this...but I am also just as determined. I am on a PC... might this only still be there on a MAC?

I've tried it just now and the Ctrl&Shift and then check out in Attributes works fine for me.
I am on a PC, with Windows 7 and Bryce 7.

I made 3 spheres with the same material; made the middle one "not AA"and rendered.
The outside ones were as smooth as can be.
The middle one was as it should be: not aliassed.

I don't know if this helps.
Just wanted to let you know.

kiwi_gg ( ) posted Thu, 08 November 2012 at 11:18 AM

Lyne, what object or material are you trying to exclude fromm AA?

Lyne ( ) posted Thu, 08 November 2012 at 6:00 PM

Well I tried it with my poser wolf...and also then tried it on one mountain terrain (with bryce material on it) and THEN on an xfrog tree... so I really really tried... test renders and all... I do remember how it looks when it works.. I can watch the scene render and even AA...and SEE how a mountain, or a tree, or object will stay jaggy...

I tried clicking every which way.. holding both keys (shift and control) down and clicking on the Attributes "check mark" ok... but nothing... sigh.  um this is the Bryce 7 pro free version from DAZ... have NO idea if that makes a diff. It says Bryce Pro 7.1 for my shortcut and when I do "about" it just says Bryce 7 Pro. I was careful to download the 32 bit version for my 32 bit win7... trying to think of every possible reason here! :)

but don't stress... just is what it is... or isn't ! LOL!

Object Specific Antialiasing

To switch Antialiasing off , hold down Shift + Control as you click the check mark to close the attributes box.

To switch it on again hold down Shift only while closing the Attributes box.

Here is another one that I had forgotten about that is very handy.....

Exact Sun and Moon placement

To switch to the sun/moon placement mode, select the Sky & Fog Palette, hold down ctrl+alt nd double-click the sky sphere.  If you don't have the sun in your view, then nothing seems to happen.....  but hold on...  Hold down ctrl+ald and click into your scene view to place the sun at the cursor position, or use ctrl+alt+shift to place the moon....  they will appear as an asterisk in your wireframe view.

Edit to say... that object specific antialiasing works only with regular (normal) AA quality renders..... does not work with super or premium rendering.

Lyne ( ) posted Fri, 09 November 2012 at 12:24 PM

nope, always use "normal" for my AA.... really guys this is just too frustrating...so don't worry about it.. having used Brcye for YEARS (even tho I forgot it was JUST the shift and control) I really do know what I am doing, and it's like this version on my machine, maybe even 'this install' is just NOT working in that way.  So I have to give up while I have some hair left.  :)

I appreciate your caring!

You know it JUST occurred to me...if my keyboard and machine went wonky when I DID hold down shift, control AND alt then there may be something in my windows hot key settings that is THE problem! I may have a glitch between my ANCIENT keyboard (ps2 with adaptors from a huge thingy) and how my win7 reads it! I BET that is it!!  I just have to live with it, as I MUST use the type of keyboard that I do have.

skiwillgee ( ) posted Fri, 09 November 2012 at 5:56 PM

Lyne, if you have given up on the shortcut method, you can always create a mask for the objects you want no AA then use it to post work a portion of the scene regular AA and no AA. It is a bit more trouble but you can achieve the same thing.

Swade ( ) posted Fri, 09 November 2012 at 8:10 PM

Hey thanks kiwi__gg....   Yeah I am still around....  still Brycing when I have time....  I love Bryce and will always have a current version.... I just don't get to the forum here as much as I used to....  I don't post much but do look in and see what is happening when I can.

Lately I have been working on anaglyphs, working with creating volumetric clouds, as well as working with true ambience....   Bryce 7 Pro is good for these things.
