Subject: My Latest Modeling...and I don't need no stinkin' sketchbook

So I'm trying something new from my usual hard-edged, SciFi, the world is spinning out of control...genre. lol. This is after 6 hours work, I figure 2 of those was learning a new craft; cars. For the modeling geeks I am using NURBS, again, something new to me but very plyable and I love the way you can affect the shape of the model.

I am going for a '51 Chevy Pickup, there will be a stock version, beat-up version and then the low rider/mean version. here's what I have so far:

Branching out is great. It helps you become well rounded. I don't think, beyond the endless attempts to make a superhero bodysuit, that I've ever modeled the same thing twice.

You have a great start there. I am also putting in a vote for the low rider version. I saw a Nissan pickup somewhere that someone modeled with working air bags. 0= on the ground, 1= about 3 inches off. But it was $200 for the model.

Oh, and the tutorials on your site have been a treasure for me, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for them.

Great start. I think I would grab the centerline of the roof, the windscreen and the hood (bonnet) and haul them upwards quite a bit, your model is looking flatter there than the ref photo.

OMG... AWESOME! I LOVE that...lol. Even the color. Very, very nice :). Remember to make a color like in the pic for it when it's done - and that Chevy sky blue color too...hehe.

@Rokket, I'm glad you are finding my tutorials helpful. Is there another Poser subject you would like to see explained there?

@Obm, it's the perspective of the shot that is decieving, besides this will all go into ZBrush for a final detailing.

@Heddheld, 3ds Max.

@ "other posters" a low rider version is definately in the works and thanks for the comments. 😄

I struggle with texturing and the materials room. I don't understand what all the nodes do or how to use them effectively. If you have knowledge there, that would be a great tutorial.

lol max would destroy my wallet in a heartbeat ;-), have you used nurbs ?? the mesh looks too nice an even to be box modeling (just started playing with nurbs in blender! so just curious)

as for tuts! keep them coming

I'm not sure how Nurbs is in Blender but with Max I am box modeling but in a different way, with simple forms and shapes, and with my stack being kept I can work on the low poly end while seeing the high poly result...a different way of problem solving for sure.

I created an engine the other day which was straight box modeling, the only Nurbs is the manifold section. I still have some fine detailing as well as the exhaust pipes to do.

Thanks Kendra. When I modeled the engine I also modeled up the frame, differential, trasmission, spings and under carriage. No one is ever going to see it but it just felt naked without. Wonderful to look at but it would never be used in a render, sometimes I do the minutia just to be complete...perhaps I should back off on that a tad? lol.

It would be used in a render if someone was to put it on a lift for a garage scene....

I'm just saying 😉

I, for one, really appreciate when someone takes the time to put the little details in there that may or may not be seen. I try to do that when I am modeling, and I find that it not only gives me satisfaction, but makes the whole model seem more realistic.

You are doing a great job so far.

I actually like it when someone adds realistic details to models like vehicles.  I'm assuming you're planning to sell it?  It should add value to it.

Yes, it's all in the details. Sets models apart from the more mundane, plainer ones :).

I have to ask, how to you get those edges so smooth?  No matter what surface I try, there's always bumps, ripples, or impurities.  It kinda sucks. :sad:

That's the beauty about working in Nurbs, it's almost opposite thinking compared to box modeling. The hard part in Nurbs (not that hard though really) is creating hard edged lines, you have to set them up correctly.

The engine is more or less complete at this point, now onto the Cab interior.

Hmmmmmm ---- haven't tried Nurbs yet.  May have to give that a go.  I was trying the shaping of a car with Splines, but that wasn't working out either. 

Thanks for the tip with the nurbs, that engine looks PHENOMINAL! 😄

Hmm. In the other thread you asked for gold flakes with adjustable size. My new Candy Glitter shader does this pretty easily.
