Subject: Using Skethup/Collata models

There are some great WWI aircraft available at Sketchup Warehouse. I open them in Sketchup and export them as Collata (.dae) objects. But when I import them into Vue 10 Studio the propellers and wheels are not there. Am I missing a step? Is there an easy way to convert dae objects to other formats?

Generally, the dae format is available for Warehouse models to download directly. This is what I  download,, since I don't know SketchUp.

I didn't see an option to download as a dae, but will check it out. I really know nothing about Sketchup myself. I just click on the download and it opens in Sketchup and from there I select export as dae. I just use Sketchup to convert the file so I can use the model in Vue.

SketchUp 6?  Later versions are less compatible with Vue.  I have SketchUp 8 Basic on my drive now.  But never used it beyond opening a few SketchUp models a friend sent to me to look at.  I may have an OBJ exporter for it.  But I know it's whack.  That's why I don't model anything in SketchUp, only view things.

There is a Ruby script available at Cornucopia that lets you export directly to Vue. Works very well. Called something like "SketchUp to Vue exporter".

I have looked at the Ruby script and may order it. I want to work a little more with the Sketcher models to see how well they look before I spend the money. Thanks for telling me about it.

I have tried various things and still cannot get the full airlplane model to upload in Vue. I even tried opening the .dae in Blender and converting it to 3ds there. It still loses parts.

I just found a free website yesterday that will do a conversion. I have only had time to try it on one model, but it worked. Babel 3D lets you upload a Sketchup .skp and get it converted online to obj/3ds, so you can import and use it in Vue... and it's free. It's of course great when you want some model from Google warehouse and don't have SU Pro.

Be careful with 3DS.  It has a limited polygon count for export.  Try to use Collada or OBJ for export from Blender if possible.

I'm keep that in mind. Would love to use Collada directly from 3D Warehouse if the entrie model would just load properly.

It depends on which Collada you are exporting from and importing to.  No two are alike, unfortunately.
