Attached Link: Instagram says it now has the right to sell your photos

Yikes.
Instagram said today that it has the perpetual right to sell users' photographs without payment or notification, a dramatic policy shift that quickly sparked a public outcry.

The new intellectual property policy, which takes effect on January 16, comes three months after Facebook completed its acquisition of the popular photo-sharing site. Unless Instagram users delete their accounts before the January deadline, they cannot opt out.
Yep, I just cancelled my account. This kind of action is simply unacceptable.

It's getting like you can't post anything online these days without the website in question wanting to keep it as if they created it. The new price of "free" sigh

i wonder what the implications will be for those who have posted pictures of their babies on FB, i've just got my niece to cancel her account. Fortunately i have never used any FB app.

You are right Laurie, it's indicative of the you posted, your loss mentality

This is what happens when a company is started with an idea and without a business plan. The business plan should be there at the start. You might need to postpone the activation of the business plan but it must be there since day zero.

Now Facebook is scrambling to find a way of making money with a company that has no business model. Of course they came up with an asinine plan that involves ripping off all the people who post on Instagram. When you look at the "geniuses" in the business and financial world it makes you wonder how they can even function as human beings.

I wonder if they've thought this through.  If I take a photo of someone on the street and put it on Instagram, they may say they have the right to license the photo, but the subject never agreed to this.  (I think Flickr ran into some trouble with this a few years back.)

pokeydots ( ) posted Tue, 18 December 2012 at 1:35 PM

So does this mean that renders and photos I have on facebook are fair game now? Not that anyone would want my renders or photos, but I still don't like the idea that they can use or sell them!

Couldn't this lead to copyright issues? I mean I take a picture and post it. In the background is a copy righted image. It's not the focus of the shot but it's still there. To use my image commercially, you would have to get the other artist's permission. I realize they could just skip over those images butwould someone so unscrupulous even think to do so?

Update, December 18 at 2:50 p.m. PT: Instagram has backed down, as we report in thisCNET article posted a few minutes ago. Instagram says it will "remove" the language that caused a user revolt over the last day.

Would think they would almost have to remove it or lose all their customers (and therefore ad revenue). LOL

Yeah, but like Ahnuld, they'll be back. Pret-a-3 summed it up perfectly. I'd be surprised if the ad based model is working really well for very many. Its far easier to monetize your biggest asset i.e. you'r user's information. People have become addicted to the 'free' services and as long as enough of them see the "benefit" of having their lives fed into the gaping maw of Big Data to be analyzed, linked and sold in various ways, so it will be. People get up in arms about each FB (and the others) type antic, FB pretends to back off in some cases and then ends up getting what they want in the long run anyway it seems - no way for them to make money otherwise.

It's quite common these days. Has anyone ever taken the time to read through all the cloud service license agreements for example? Most of them have a similar section in it, allowing the owners of the service to do whatever they please with the content you place in the cloud.

I may be old fashioned, but as soon as something says free, I start wondering what the catch is and all these social medias I far from trust, so I don't entrust anything to them at all.

Due to the childish TOS changes, I'm not allowed to link to my other products outside of Rendo anymore :(

The same could be said of our burgeoning police state, but I guess it's all one and the same.

Ouch! I really have to wonder what the rationale is here. Are they that hard up for material or is it just a megalomaniacal lust for control? I guess this is how they acquired their laptop battery design and their CD copy ptotection software. * *

At least I am not alone and as to backing up to a cloud, what do you do if you want to download data and it is raining.

I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 -  Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB  storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU .   The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.
