Goodnight sweet prince, the production of the PS2, probably one of the greatest consoles of all time, has ended.  13 years, 150 million sold.  I remember getting one so I could play Final Fantasy 10 (ironically the last good one of the series).

Wow, I feel old now seeing how long it has been since released. I remember when it came out and you couldn't find any, anywhere. I stumbled on a store that had 2 of them and got one with an extra controller and other options. After playing with it for a month I decided I did not like console controllers, coming from a PC gaming background, so it sat there. It was right before Xmas and my 2 young nephews were badgering my sister about a PS2, but none could be found, so I packaged mine up and gave it to them as their Xmas gift, man, the uncle was the hero and we had lots of fun with it., LOL.

Personally I wish all consoles would follow so more games could be worked on for the PC, oh well.

My second PS2 is still going strong. I do however have a box of wasted controllers. T.T

Did they keep backwards compatibility?

Probably the greatest catalogue of games on that system, or maybe it's just nostalgia. On a side note, I thought that FF XII was pretty good. The PS2 had backward compatability.

Currently a 360 owner.

Ragtopjohnny ( ) posted Fri, 28 December 2012 at 10:52 PM

Ahhh, but I take it no backward compat in PS3? .

It'd be worth it to get it just to play Twisted Metal again.  I actually beat those games with all characters and no cheat codes.

Xbox kind of ruined it for me when I got the Red Ring of Death on my original console..

Since then, it's been the PC and Flight Sim and some shoot 'em up games for me.

Bought a refurbished 360 for $100... It's been going strong for about 3 years now... Put some serious mileage on it with Oblivion, Skyrim and the Mass Effect series.

Not a bad price for the refurbished.  Sometimes those are better than the new.  😄

Mine still gets used regularly, not bad concidering I bought it the day after it was launched here in the UK.

Mined you originally I only bought it to play my PS games on, as my PSX had blown it's drive all over the place two weeks before the PS2 was launched.

primorge ( ) posted Sat, 29 December 2012 at 1:22 AM

PS2 was plagued by the 'Disc Read Error' problem in it's first incarnation. Recall having to send it to Sony to be repaired, as did many others. When the slim version was released I don't recall many problems with it. Started to drift toward MS near the end of the PS2 heyday.

Bejaymac ( ) posted Sat, 29 December 2012 at 2:59 AM

If you got one that was built before the PS2's launch then you wont have had that problem, they were built to last as they got metal gears in the drives. The ones built after the launch had cheaper plastic gears, which could wear out quite quickly, which is when the Disc Read Error would start.

To date all I've had to do to mine is clean it from time to time, and while I'm inside I add a little lube to the gears, metal gears are a bit noisier than plastic .

primorge ( ) posted Sat, 29 December 2012 at 5:36 AM

...and here I had thought it was because I used to rest my bong on top of it. Speaking of Metal Gears, MG Subsistance is still one of the greatest games of all time IMO. PS2.

Got my first PS2 in 2001. It was the Gran Turismo 3 racing bundle. Mostly I played Final Fantasy XI online. Last year I started getting the occasional disk error. So I got a new one.

The earlier ones, yes.  Most of them, no.

It might be on sale in the PSstore for 10 bucks though.  I know they were trying to add a lot of popular older titles there.

These days, the number of exclusive titles is diminishing so save for a few, you don't really need a console.  However you are missing out on JRPGs and some action games that don't make the leap to PC.

NOW your talking. I've got so many hundreds of hours in ME, Oblivion and Skyrim....

Now I've started over with Skyrim. The new content brought me back-after almost a year.

PC gaming (Mac actually) gave me various forms of joint pain. Stopped long ago.

Rags- they fixed the RROD issue a few years back.

For me computer gaming caused too many versions of repetitive stress pain-not so with console gaming.

I put my computer through enough drama with poser and other 3d apps (also on a Mac)... with a console it's a dedicated machine that performs well at a reasonable price, a huge library, and a controller scheme that I'm more comfortable with. I remember back in the day PC gamers would always slam console gamers with things like "yeah, the graphics suck". Don't think that is the case any longer, most PC titles are ported to console now and frequently with improvements and additional content (the Witcher 2; Assassin of Kings is a sterling example)... PC gamers have plenty to be defensive about. One advantage I see to PC gaming is the modding that can be done, that's about it.

I've been having the craving to play Skyrim again too, Eric... I have a high level vampire character so the DLC is particularly interesting.

mysticeagle ( ) posted Sat, 29 December 2012 at 2:28 PM

never got controllers thumb then lol..........Actually there is a reason, my eyes don't cope well with one person shooter games, and i havent the coordination to control 7 buttons at once, I once treated myself to a pc controller to play madden NFL , big mistake lol. Tried a few driving games with it, most turned out like demolition derby, i even played mafia once, even bigger mistake, a wannabee gangster running into walls wielding a baseball bat and beating himself senseless with it. I guess Total War and the Riven and Myst series are about as much as this old brain can cope with at any one time........

Having a console keeps my computer free for more important things, like Poser :p
