Subject: Cel Shading, where to start?

In the current furry render challenge blurb, it states that entries with Postwork and or cel Shading are welcome

Where would you start with cel shading, I presume that the author is referring to the tinting technique that seems to be popular in types of photography such as weddings, where a tree in the background is made to appear more vividly green than it actually is?

Would this involve additional software or could the results be achieved in say Photoshop or PSP?, I presume that this sort of colour enhancement(if i have understood the term cel shading correctly) cannot be achieved from within the poser material room..........I further presume it would involve creating your image in a series of transparent background images....

cel-shading is often cartoon line-art with monocolour zones between the lines, as in disney, simpsons or some anime.  several users here may describe how to do this in poser.

Yes, I do it within poser using olivier's art materials and semidieu's toon script - they work together and can be found at runtimedna

there are also some great photoshop actions that can give a nice toon effect after the render. I tend to us a little bit of both techniques combined together as well as some other postwork ie drawing a few wrinkles and folds in clothing.

Esther nailed it on the head, there a several ways to do this. Probably the best or most flexible route would be post work in photoshop.

...Also try not to confuse conventional comic book line art techniques with animation cel techniques. There are differences. Cross hatching and line or gradient generated half tone methods for example. Look at some traditional animation cels and some comic panals for comparison, particularly in terms of line and interaction with color.

oh and talking of tradional - ish, manga studio 5 is out.  it has some 3D components that you can pose eg people to use say if you want to make crowd scenes.

You can open your poser render in manga studio 5 and then you can draw onto it with some really neat tools.

Thanks for the replies, I was thinking of entirely the wrong effect, I'm actually not really into Manga or Toon art (personal preference only)not that there isn't some good stuff out there, but I think just for the experience I might have a crack at it....

well if it is just one off why not just download some toon photoshop action from the net and use it to give your render a cel shaded kind of look.  there are free ones and also there are instructions how to do it manually.

You can do a little of this within poser as well... http://www.runtimedna.com/ArtMaterials/ Theres also a chap here at the RMP with similar things. Lighting also affects the effectiveness of these as well. Plus you'll find theres very much a "sameyeness" to the images, which can be a tad boring to look at. So if you're looking for something original, be prepared to play. Edited to add - Vue has a toon like shader in it's default materials. Can work well

I swithered making my forum comp entry more toon shaded... hadn't got as far as working out exactly how.

In the end I liked the carpet effect plushie fleece shader I got going on too much to forsake it ;)

But I was going to have a go at something more along the lines of what I understand by "cel shaded"... probably using Manga Studio somehow, as I got the EX version of that on sale for thirty bucks recently.

Pretty sure I can import Poser scenes into that, in some way, shape or form?

For making trees greener:

 

Load a 1 sided square.  Then you are going to want to use a combonation of an image map, and an HSV node.  If you only want to enhance certain areas, you're going to have to muck around with blender nodes and image map masks.

You can also use a color math bias (or gain, forget which) node with a math add plugged into the bottom part.
