Steve Gibson's Site; Gibson Research Corp (GRC) is the premier pure-research site on the web. He has a coule of products for sale (Spinrite 5 saved my hash when a harddrive crash threatened 23 Gigs of data!), but he also functions as a one-man research/info clearinghouse for all threats internet. I've used 3 different firewalls, including Norton's, & none were near secure - then I tried the one he recommends most highly (ZoneAlarm) and finally found myself pretty much invisible to hackers, trojans, etc. (personal version is Free, too!) GRC.com is well worth the looksee just for the literate & easy-to-follow explanations of some of the dangers of the net, & which ones are likely to be real concerns.
Interesting!! this site seems to be for windows only I am on a MAC and I am using " Net Barrier" on my OS 9.1 Drive it has a feature that will actually send me an email to my domain email to notify me of attempted intrusions ,ping attacks etc. I was recently on the phone with my ISP ,Comcast Communications about some minor changes to their DHCP Server and my own ISP could not "see" my my MAC from their end.. I am running MAC OSX on my second drive MAC OSX has a built in firewall that is part of its unix core that is virtually impossible to breach. it also has a built in network utilit that allows me to finger the DNS of any atempted intruder and put them on my permanet stop list, ( this can be done under OS9.1 using net barrier also) Any one connected to the web should have a firewall.

There is a discussion in the Hardware forum about firewalls and Hotshot posted this great link to "Shields UP!" a site that tests the vulnerablility of your computer to intrusion. Pretty cool & but pretty scary. Give it a try. The main site, Gibson Research, also explains a great deal about the ins and outs of firewalls, port scanners and the like.
