Subject: Compare V5 genesis and V4

LanceB ( ) posted Mon, 11 March 2013 at 10:49 PM · edited Wed, 20 November 2024 at 12:25 AM

I have hundreds of dollars worth of stuff for V4 and am hesitant to jump over to genesis v5. I use Poser and have tried DAZ studio but didn't like it. Your opinion please on getting V5 genesis and starting over with a bunch of money invested in V5. Is it really that much better?

nakamuram ( ) posted Mon, 11 March 2013 at 11:10 PM

I don't think V5 is worth using in Poser.  DSON clothing export has not worked well for me, and I don't like the new Genesis clothing at all.

If you're going to use DS4, then V5, S5, and A5 may be worth it, since you can convert V3 and V4 clothing quite well.   Plus they have V3 and V4 shape morphs for Genesis.  Shoes don't convert well, and Genesis shoe selection is very limited.

ashley9803 ( ) posted Tue, 12 March 2013 at 12:34 AM

If you're not going to use DS then I also don't see much value in it. I've always viewed Dyson like running Windows on a Mac - possible but not what was intended.

3doutlaw ( ) posted Tue, 12 March 2013 at 9:14 AM

I would try working with DS4.5 Pro (free) a little first, using V4.  There are some really good features.  Of course, there are some features from Poser you will miss.

If you find you can work with it well, and like it, then I would say V5 is a worthy purchase. (though now maybe wait unitl end of MM to see if she goes 50% off again)

If not, then maybe not worth it, but perhaps you can give DSON a try and see if you can get it to do what you want with default genesis and some converts.

Why do you want to transfer to Genesis? Are you embarking on a project where it is necessary or will be necessary in the future?

Genesis is fine in DS but I prefer Poser and Genesis does not offer me enough to consider changing software and abandoning the content I have already. I am also not keen on dson. Genesis works in it but it is far from optimal. Other characters that work in Poser natively give me all that I need but it is horses for courses and your requirements are probably different from mine. However, if you really need to use Genesis then I would advise using it in DS and not Poser.

vilters ( ) posted Tue, 12 March 2013 at 9:33 AM

Genesis is for DS, not for Poser.

DSON is a night mare and the file sizes are HUGE !!!!
Loading times are hrs... LOL
Poser9 can go on its knees RAM wise with a single DSON figure.

Nah, stay away from Genesis.

Didn't say what your goal are or what you wanted from Vicky.

If you just want to render the ever now and then still in Poser.
Then V4 will do just fine.

Use can use Both Poser V4 & DAZ Studio V5 who said you can't have it all.

Since V5 was made for DAZ Studio I would use DAZ Studio for V5.DAZ Studio is Free
V5 has a lower polycount.uses subdividable meshes so V5 bends better.
V5 is a much newer mesh modeled like highend app's model.
V5 is more suited for all the app's.
V4 was made for Poser,zBrush she's not really made for App's LW,C4D etc etc like V5 was.

I'd wait to see what Poser 10 brings to the table before I'd spend a lot of money.

Perhaps it'll make Genesis work much better in Poser or perhaps the new figures will be so good you don't even want to use V4 or V5 anymore.

But nethertheless, here are the Pros and Cons for V4 and V5 as I currently see it:

Pros:

V4: Lots and lots and lots of content. Several "tool kits" available to improve her rigging. Free weightmapped version available. Works very well natively in Poser. Injection system to reduce cr2 size. Can be mixed with G4, A4 and S4. Can wear V3 clothing using V4toV3 figure.

V5: Vastly improved rigging due to weightmapping. The new "It" girl, so she gets the latest, greatest stuff. Part of the Genesis Genepool, so she can be mixed with any other Genesis figure. More realistic default shape than V4. Can wear all existing 3rd and 4th gen clothes using legacy shapes. Can be expanded by geografting (Studio only) and other UV sets, so V4 textures still work. Has subdivision functionality.

Cons:

V4: Very poorly rigged. Lots of magnet "clutter" make her a memory hog, and the joint improvement kits even add to that problem (Free weightmapped version doesn't have that problems). Stylized default shape. Wastes polygons for LOD functionality that doesn't work in Poser, so less mesh detail than V3. Available joint improvements need clothing to be tweaked, too. Has been used for six years now, so people get a bit tired of her.

V5: Needs DSON importer to work in Poser which doesn't support all of her functionality. Very low mesh resolution, so not much built in mesh detail. (Smoothing is achieved via subdivision) No injection system in Poser, so cr2 files can get pretty big over time with huge loading times. Much less content available and new content coming at a much lesser rate as she needs Studio to make content for her.

So, I'd download Studio 4.5 to get the Genesis base and maybe buy V5 and download the DSON importer to have a direct comparison inside Poser.

But as I said I'd wait with content shopping until I know where Poser 10 is headed.

Have you heard any rumors, rumors of rumors, or rumors of that, regarding P10?  I've asked a couple of times here, at RDNA and at Smith Micro support, and the answer is either nothing, or no information is available at this time... (maybe I am missing it, if you got a link?)

If they started talking about it even now, I would suppose it is at least EOY before release...?  Thats a long time to wait, for a possibility of improvement in this area.

WandW ( ) posted Wed, 13 March 2013 at 7:44 AM

Genesis/V5 can be exported from Studio as a CR2 to use in Poser, but the crease angle needs to be increased to 180 and smoothing enabled.  Some materials may need to be set up by hand; I haven't tried the export functionality with recent versions of Studio.  Phil Cooke has a WW plug-in for Genesis to convert clothing to it, but I haven't purchased it...

Nope, no rumors.

All I know is that SM are currently looking for new names for their figures, so I don't think it'll be thaaaaat long until we get some more info.

But then, I'm using neither V4 nor V5, so perhaps I'm a little more patient than others.

Just trying to be educational.

With zBrush You can rase V4 or V5 polycount to millions for all the detail you would ever need.
or
ya can keep the polycount low and convert the detail in to a texture.
It's how they make the best game meshes.

The rumor is after Poser 9 comes poser 10. But who can trust a rumor!

Bagginsbill said a few weeks ago  that he was using Poser X, which I found odd, as I would have expected him to be using PoserPro 2014.  This leads me to wonder if there will be a Poser Pro 2014, at least as we know it, as this implies the addition of Gamma correction to Poser X, at the very least.

Of course, It could just be that X= 'Pro 2014', instead of X=10... 😄

One poser would be nice...especially since having a 32 bit version seems preposterous at this point.

But some of us only have a 32bit system, and no hope of getting a new computer.  Maybe I should ask for donations if PP2014 is only 64 bit.  I would be upset to be excluded from the next version.

jestmart ( ) posted Thu, 14 March 2013 at 10:43 AM

Sorry but 32bit is mostly dead.  It only makes sense when a program doesn't need or use lots of memory, Poser does.  I sympathize with folks that can't upgrade, I've been there, but 64bit processors and OSes have been out for nearly a decade.  Companies need to walk that fine line between supporting their base and moving with the times.  I suspect the majority of Poser users have 64bit CPUs and OSes, time for Poser to move on.

WandW ( ) posted Thu, 14 March 2013 at 11:15 AM

Considering that MS is selling a 32-bit version of Windows 8, I think 32-bit software is going to be with us for some time yet...  😉

Poser Pro 2012 comes in a 32 bit and 64 bit version so maybe Poser X will too. :D

zBrush is still just 32 bit.
But with there HD Geometry Billion Poly count capability.
There's no big rush for a 64 bit zBrush.

Just about all the App's have 32 bit or 64 bit.
Even Poser Pro 2012.
Lightwave ,DAZ Studio ,C4D ,Max ,Modo ,Blender etc etc.

I get why DAZ Studio ,Blender has 32 bit or 64 bit.

But if some one could afford Max .
Then they could afford a 64 bit PC.
I don't know why Max would still have a 32 bit versions.

Are 64 bit PC not legal in some country's or something ?

True, I guess I meant something that "only" supports 32 bit.  (i.e. should support both at this point)

Online Now!

32 Bit is far from dead.

Eliminating 32 bit software from your line up can remove a large percentage of your customers rather quickly.

If your product is used in Virtual Machines, you just commited corporate suicide. The only thing running is 64 bit on most servers is the op system, and supporting programs. Everything else is running in a 32 bit virtual machines.

There are 64 bit virtual machines out there, but they are more a testing enviroment than anything.

Some 64 bit operating systems have dropped 32 bit support, which has had some repercussions. Don't expect other companies to jump in that hole with them any time soon.
